Whilst we have all been busy with C19, Brexit has been still in the background, so I thought as a break from C19 I would start up Brexit again??

Latest gossip/leak

Liz Truss has written to Johnson warning him that his border plans “ risk smuggling, damage to the U.K. reputation and WTO wrath who may well launch a legal challenge over the plan to phase in customs and health checks Over 6 months.

Something else that’s going to run and run.

Negotiations with the EU are due to end 31 October.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 07-Sept-20 06:49:31

No “oven ready deal” then

Whitewavemark2 Mon 07-Sept-20 07:11:50

So no deal on our exports. Businesses must be incredibly worried, particularly farmers. WTO terms on meat means between 38-90% tariffs. No business will be able to sustain those sort of hits.

What is this government playing at?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 07-Sept-20 07:23:58

The only consolation I have this morning is that it wasn’t all of us who brought this down on our heads. Not sure how that is consolation, but it’s all I have this morning.

There will be border check points between Northern Ireland and the Republic, which is against the Good Friday Agreement and will be devastating for farmers on the border. That's a red line to the EU, so it's a signal that there will be no agreement. The UK is trying a last ditch attempt at blackmailing the EU, but it won't ditch the Republic's interests.

growstuff Mon 07-Sept-20 07:27:00

The UK still has to negotiate with the WTO. It's not automatic.

I wonder when Nissan will make an announcement.

Grandad1943 Mon 07-Sept-20 07:34:30

Strange how those forum members who were so loud in their support of Brexit in so many threads only a year or so back are now so quiet.

There is an old saying that states "the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence".

Grandad1943 Mon 07-Sept-20 07:40:03

Farrage has also flown the coup it would seem. No one for the forum Brexiteirs to kneel down and worship now either. ??

The EU cannot ditch the interests of the republic. They are still a member state of the European Union, Britain is not.

Just who is now going to trust our Government with any trade deals? Our reputation is shot.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 07-Sept-20 07:54:19

In my opinion our demands that the single market level playing field rules are changed for the U.K. simply are not achievable.

We have been crystal clear for decades what these rules are and that as members ourselves were never going to deviate from them in the interest of fair play.

I’m not quiet about Brexit Grandad1943 ?

I’m delighted Boris has passed the EU an ultimatum. 15 October to decide on a deal or we walk. He’s piled the pressure on. Time to stop prevaricating.

Over to you Ursula von der Leyen.

Davidhs Mon 07-Sept-20 08:45:23

“Labour said the prime minister was “threatening to renege on the UK’s legal obligations” and called it “an act of immense bad faith: one that would be viewed dimly by future trading partners and allies around the world”.

From day one, way back in 2016 the Brexiteers were negotiating in “Bad Faith” it seems that has not changed and they are clutching at straws trying to avoid the humiliation of total failure of the Brexit project.Business is no different to Politics if the other side is negotiating in bad faith you walk away. It’s a matter of trust, I like to sleep at night so only get involved with those I trust, the EU is no different.

A Total No Deal will be very damaging, the EU is asking for equivalent standards for anything that gets exported to them. They don’t want us importing sub standard materials and re exporting to the EU, all of that is incorporated in the Withdrawl Agreement.

Urmstongran Mon 07-Sept-20 08:54:56

Well the EU said - nothing is agreed until everything is agreed - so lets agree nothing and keep OUR £31 BILLION and see how the EU balance their budget then.

I was always aware that you would not be quiet Urmstongran, that's why I made that post. ?

Grandad1943 Mon 07-Sept-20 09:06:52

You have always stuck to your guns Urmstongran and that I truly respect.

So, love your Brexit posts as they liven up this forum, so keep them coming in. ??

vegansrock Mon 07-Sept-20 09:09:15

We’ve spent more on. Brexit than all of our contributions for past 40 years - so keeping the money? It’s already gone.

Do keep up ug they already have done so, been quietly going about the necessary change since 2016

growstuff Mon 07-Sept-20 09:17:22

Ursula von der Leyen would be glad to see the back of the UK. It will be far easier for the EU to adjust to new market conditions than the UK.

Does it really not bother you that Johnson lied Urmstongran and is prepared to rip up an agreement his own government made? Do you not care about Northern Ireland? Do you not care that the UK's international reputation will be shot to pieces?

MaizieD Mon 07-Sept-20 09:28:50

I think we could safely assume that the answer to your questions is 'no', growstuff ?

I sometimes wonder if Ug has had the Stepford treatment...

Urmstongran Mon 07-Sept-20 09:59:39

I thought NI were happy growstuff the best of both worlds for 4 years then vote?

Grandad1943 I didn’t disappoint!
?

That comment was a bit mean MaizieD just because we disagree doesn’t make me a Stepford wife.

Do you need a handkerchief for all that bile and tears?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 07-Sept-20 10:12:23

There are lots of pro-Brexit members on GN.......the reason they have stopped posting on political threads is purely down to the vitriol they receive from pro-EU posters.

Urmstongran Mon 07-Sept-20 10:15:42

Partly true GG13.
?
Actually I also think it’s because there’s less need to talk about it now as it’s actually happening.

Hurrah!!
??

Good Brexit discussion on 5 live.

varian Mon 07-Sept-20 10:20:49

Or perhaps it's because so many who voted Leave now realise that they were fooled into believing that "it would be the easiest deal in history" and "we hold all the cards" and are horrified to see that many of those who lied to them are pursuing a "no-deal brexit" which was not what they voted for.

MaizieD Mon 07-Sept-20 10:23:30

That comment was a bit mean MaizieD just because we disagree doesn’t make me a Stepford wife.

It's not the disagreeing that makes me wonder, it's the unblinking adoration of the most worthless man in the UK.
