The other title is totally out of sink- this is orchestrated fascism

in the USA, right not. Let's not talk about 'throwing toys out of pram'.

Never forget the armed thugs and domestic terrorists currently storming the Capitol in Washington DC, didn’t come from nowhere.
They are the end result of a carefully orchestrated strategy to destabilise the US, allowed to work by the power-greed and self-interest of politicians and media pundits, at least some of whom knew what Trump was and that his dog whistle fascism was very wrong.
There are many, many connections between Trump’s story and the people currently running the U.K. - not just similarities but the same shadowy figures, the same strategies, the same data harvesting and dark disinformation campaigns.

Well I know I can be a bit thick at times....(it’s ok you don’t need to agree) . but I don’t remotely understand what this thread has turned into.
Looks like OP may have simply misunderstood the date of the original toys out of pram thread and now it’s turned into comparing GN posters who were anti Brexit to the utterly utterly dreadful Trump supporting mob. How did that happen ?

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jan-21 08:53:37

How did that happen?

Hysteria.

Participation in our democracy seems to be driven by the instant-gratification worlds of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and the twenty-four-hour news cycle. We’re using modern technology to revert to primitive kinds of human relations. The media knows what sells----conflict and division. It’s also quick and easy. All too often anger works better than reason; emotion trumps evidence. A sanctimonious, sneering one-liner, no matter how bogus is seen as straight talk, while a calm, well-argued response is seen as canned and phony. It reminds me of an old political joke. Why do you take such an instant dislike to people? It saves a lot time.

A sanctimonious, sneering one-liner,

Commonly known in my family as BF's or brain farts. No need to offer evidence or reasoning just throw it out there and the nastier and more personal the better. Woe betide the person who doesn't accept them as an equal truth as they can expect personal and pile on attacks for offering evidence and reasoning in return. We seem to be a very split society sad

Lucca Fri 08-Jan-21 09:19:02

Who said sanctimonious etc ? To what does that refer in this thread ?(seen plenty on GN that’s true) I’m lost.

^ They've had to accept it. It doesn't mean that they have to be happy about it or not have a say.^

I just wished they’d accepted it from Day 1 growstuff instead of trying to thwart it. Have a say? Yes of course, there was huge disappointment and even disbelief. But what was shoved in the path to delivery of the vote for over 4 years was a travesty of acceptance.

Again, that seems quite an anti-democratic suggestion. They are allow to use the law, the media and anything else that is legal to test the result.

Democracy has been said to comprise four key elements: a political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; the active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; protection of the human rights of all citizens; and a rule of law. [American political scientist Larry Diamond]

Sanctimonious one liners nothing to ever offer the thread that is of any quality reasoned argument, but brain farts aplenty?. BF for short.

TBH they are best ignored.

And now for the volte face.
Now, Congress has certified the results. A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.
Will anyone believe Trump's words? I wonder who wrote the script? It doesn't sound like him, but must now be taken at face value. However, more ominously, he concludes with the message to his insrgents: I know you are disappointed, but I also want you to know that our incredible journey is only just beginning.

No once a liar always a liar.

We have one in this country (well more than one) so we should find the lies easy to recognise.

Callistemon Fri 08-Jan-21 09:56:53

Which programmes are you watching? One of my cousins is in one of them.
Saving Lives at Sea on BBC2 growstuff.
I don't always manage to watch it
Heroes all of them - and they are volunteers.

What a contrast to watching the mob on TV.

Totally agree Lucca but I suppose somebody, somewhere had to bring Brexit into it.
If only OP had admitted they hadn’t noticed the “toys out of the pram” thread title referred to the Presidential debates back in October - a lot of breath might not have been wasted.

I think Trump is a dead duck in the water. Finally he seem to accept that Congress having certified the results the new President will be inaugurated on 20th January. Even if he is telling a big fat whopping lie I don’t see it will make any difference. He has discredited himself with his party who are socially distancing themselves from him.

There are people on social media claiming that the video of Trump's climbdown speech is actually a deep fake ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepfake )

Deep fake or genuine, I wouldn't trust him further than I can spit...

There are also rumblings on social media of plans for 20th January. I would think, after Wednesday's events, that they will be taken very seriously.

MaizieD Fri 08-Jan-21 11:35:52

He has discredited himself with his party who are socially distancing themselves from him.

He doesn't need the party any more. He has millions of batsh*t crazy devotees who have demonstrated that they'll do anything for him.

25Avalon Fri 08-Jan-21 11:45:04

MaisieD if he wants to be President he cannot do it without his party backing. This he emphatically no longer has. The US constitution is against him. Maybe you are thinking he is still leader and commander supreme of the US military and will be using them to force his stay as President?

The only legitimate way is to prove the voting was rigged and have another election. As I have said before the method of counting votes in the US seems highly questionable and one would have thought there should be a more watertight means then there could be no disputing.

PippaZ Fri 08-Jan-21 13:58:36

I wonder if they (the Trump family) will start a new party?

Wasn't the reason for the burning of the Reichstag thought to be because Hitler could not get command of it?

Out of Washington police were calling in to Washington DC but seem to have been stood down quite quickly. Virginia declared a State of Emergency when DC extended theirs to 15 days. Things were obviously being done but not actually at the Capitol.

varian Fri 08-Jan-21 14:00:18

Trump's team made 62 attempts to prove in the courts that there had been voting irregularities and 61 times they were thrown out, often by Republican judges and Trump nominees.

One oft-repeated claim was that dead people had voted and they did find a man who used his own vote, then voted for his dead mother and again for his dead mother-in-law. All three votes were for Trump!

How much more proof do these conspiracy theorists need?

My mother was studying in Munich in 1932- it took her a while to realise what was going on and return home. Same for the British Ladies in Florence in the 'Tea with Mussolini' film last night.

What we are seeing, in the USA and other parts of the world, is the rise of fascism, all over again. Hiding under 'nationalisistic pride and isolationism'. My mother and the Florence Ladies didn't have history to tell them- we do. We know.

You've been reading too much facebook, 25Avalon

There was absolutely no evidence of wholesale vote rigging. All attempts to take it to law, in a number of states, were laughed out of court because there wasn't any evidence.

I hope you won't now tell me that the judges were corrupt enemies of the people...

Strangely, he's not contesting the result in states that declared for him. Surely, if the US method of vote counting is so dodgy there must have been major errors in some of those states too? Perhaps Biden won them after all... grin
