Prince Philip has died

That was my post to our local social network Nextdoor posted yesterday - unfortunately there were a couple of people who made unpleasant remarks. And please people - leave Meghan out of it. I understand her doctors have said its not wise to travel given her pregnancy but, even if it is for other reasons, it has nothing to do with the death of Prince Philip!

I was curious to know if he would have received a telegram from his wife ?. RIP D of E.

The coverage yesterday was OTT. The BBC was inundated with complaints.
Moreover if someone chooses to watch television all day and night it's their business, their choice and not for anyone to criticise. For many it's their only company and it's very disappointing to have things cancelled, and not everyone, especially older folk have Netflix etc.
Yes, soaps will be shown at a later date but if you are lying in bed ill as I was and looking forward to favourite programmes to help you get through the day that's not much use.
I make no apology for saying I missed Pointless, Neighbours and Coronation Street - light entertainment that would have passed the time.
That is my choice.

When George VI died so unexpectedly the Queen and Philip were suddenly faced with leaving their relaxed life with their young family. Philip was enjoying his naval career, but decided that he must abandon it, and support the woman he loved. It must have been so difficult for him to come to terms with the new regime, but he succeeded, splendidly in what he set out to do.
The Covid restrictions must have allowed the Queen more time to spend with her beloved husband, so at least one good thing has resulted from them. I imagine that the low-key funeral will also be a relief, and much less stressful for the Queen and her family.
I always liked Philip, and the twinkle in his eye! May he rest in peace

I haven’t said anything nasty about Philip,( or Harry or Meghan come to that). So no need to be patronising or sneering. Why should people switch their TV off if they don’t want to? it’s not like we can all go to the pub or theatre. TV has become the main source of entertainment for many this past year. Yes there’s loads of other channels and that’s what 90%+ of viewers did , so what was the point of cancelling the schedules? I’ve nothing against the old chap, yes it’s sad, yes he was married to Queen etc, just like most people I objected to the TV companies and other people telling me I had to suddenly “reflect on his life “.

It is the first time I have ever complained to the BBC but the coverage was OTT. I am not anti royalist but why have the same programme on BBC1 and BBC2? I also haven’t seen any news since Thursday because I have switched off before we get off the main story - it is so repetitive. I think Prince Philip would have had something to say about it - he was very forthright in his comments!
Thankfully I could escape with Netflix.

I think it’s for the best that Harry is coming to the funeral alone.Apart from Meghan’s pregnancy, and the Oprah interview and all that entailed, it will be good for him to see his family on his own.

I say this as a mum who has a daughter, grandchildren and son in law in Australia. For obvious reasons, we don’t get to see them often, particularly now, (4 years since), and fond as I am of my Australian SIL, sometimes I really want to have a good heart to heart with my DD, and the opportunity does not arise very often.

I’d rather reflect on my Dads life - he was in the RN in WW2 involved in battles etc, but died of an industrial disease 30 years ago.

Sometimes funerals bring people together and help with family bonding. I hope this will happen for the Windsors. I am glad Harry is coming and I am sure they will all do their best to heal rifts.

They told me specifically lemsip. I didn’t just read it.

They will have to be very selective about who attends the funeral - 30 is a very small number for a big family. I am sure that other in-laws will have to be left out.

I’m surprised Harry has the nerve to show his face at the funeral after the way he totally disrespected his entire family on national television just a few weeks ago.
I used to quite like Harry and Meghan, but after that interview I literally can’t stand them.

Harry is coming, that's what matters.

I'm happy to join a separate thread discussing points arising from the outfall of what has gone on recently, but not on this one.

Harry is doing the right thing and I hope it is the start of a reconciliation between him and his close family (father and brother particularly).

A funeral should be a healing time - not people getting vindictive.

Lucca you are so protective of Harry and Meg you are reading what hasn’t been written. I could understand if you jumped in if any other member of this family were criticised but that doesn’t bother you, only Harry and Meg.

Exactly my point. It’s about prince Philip. If harry comes over he’s wrong if he doesn’t he’s wrong.

I’m not remotely protective of them, don’t be ridiculous, I have never met them. I simply find it in poor taste to start in at them yet again under these circumstances.

When we peer into the reflective mirror that is Death we are better able to see the meaning and purpose of our own lives. I’m adjusting my sails the storms are rising.

I wish the funeral was private, no tv cameras.

This is NOT against Harry, but the damn media

Will the brothers walk together,Will they speak ,Will they walk together as they did at their mothers funeral.

The cameras will be on Harry making it the Harry show.

There are 4 children, 8 grandchildren and a wife.

The constant harking back to someone considered unworthy of the RF tells me more about the poster than the person they are talking about. The only reason people know all this detail about who'll walk with whom and all the rest of it is that they are finding it in the media, who know that there is money to be made from the prurient interest in the Queen's grandchildren.

Have some respect for Philip and the Queen, talk about them. Right now, its nobody's business how their family behaves or what they say. Have some respect, for goodness sake. And this is a Republican talking.
