Anyone understand why Johnson is so far ahead in the polls?

I don’t.

The thing is Urmstongran, if I was working in an industry where my thoughtful, kind friend would benefit from any work I could put their way, I'd have to declare that tyre. That's how it works.

I once had to declare a £20 candle I got from a friend who worked in a company that supplied the company I worked for. (Sorry, bad grammar....)

GrannyGravy13 Fri 30-Apr-21 13:25:16

Do you actually believe that every Company declares everything it is given by Reps etc?

Pantglas2 Fri 30-Apr-21 13:25:59

It has happened to me on a very small scale Urmstongran at a time when I was skint and I’ve never forgotten that kindness.

It means that now I give things I no longer need away rather than sell them on eBay wherever - paying it back.

Not sure any of that applies to politicians mind (of any hue)

Alegrias1 Fri 30-Apr-21 13:26:29

The ones I worked for did. Can't vouch for the unscrupulous, dishonest ones.

Wow. Peoples view of declaration of interests is interesting.

Because many people are stupid?

Because left wingers hurl insults like this at people who don’t vote in the way they think they should. Would guess it’s lack of faith in Starmer and the angry and aggressive members of the Labour Party as much as anything. The prejudiced, so called socialists, are more concerned with their own vendettas than the people who used to vote for them.

Keep it up though, if you don’t want to form the govt in coming decades.

I’m amused by the twisting and turning - if you’re very rich, £58k is peanuts and so it’s fine if it’s not declared.??. I understand that many people don’t care about the PM not obeying the law on declaring gifts and other freebies but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. In some ways it’s the fact that for whatever reason the law wasn't followed that is concerning. Such contempt shown.

It's not a good look is it Kamiso for the posters who make these remarks or the the party they're supposedly representing.

There is a very interesting thread on Mumsnet called "What do the Labour Party have to do to win back voters" or words to that effect. It is mostly Labour supporters on the thread and one of the points made is the sneery attitude towards people who don't think like them calling them thick and bigoted

I can't find that thread Gossamerbeynon1945. Could you put a link on please?

I think, of the times I have heard the words "thick" and "bigoted" they have mainly come in an accusation that others use them (as in your post). I don't think I have ever seen anyone actually say that about someone else.

Witzend Fri 30-Apr-21 13:44:32

Thanks for the reminder of that, Beckett - it was a Big Thing at the time, and I seem to remember a lot of hoo ha and scandalised opinions over some extremely expensive wallpaper there, too.

God knows I’m no fan of Boris, but it’s as well to remember that Labour has never been 100% squeaky clean, either. Who was that red haired youngish female Labour MP who seemed to vanish off the face of the earth after the expenses scandal? Certainly no saintly halo there.

Completely agree. Excellent post.

There are kind and generous people in this world Urmstongran but then, if you are an MP and certainly if you are PM, you just declare that they have given you the money. Those are the rules and they are there for good reason.

This is not curtain-gate or any other furnishing-gate, it is bung-gate and until we know who paid it we cannot decide what he may or may not have had to do in return. Even if his Dad gave him the money it would look pretty odd if he then got a pierage.

Which posters make what remarks? If you want to criticise a specific poster, have the guts to name names rather than use sweeping cowardly generalisations. And FYI I don’t represent any party but have a moral philosophy which could be described as left of centre.

The thought that you don't speaks volumes.

Who has said that the LP is squeaky clean? As for MPs and the expenses scandal, it went across all political parties.

We have a declaration policy in our Company, I know many who haven’t.

It doesn’t bode well to make unfounded assumptions !

I do think much of politics is becoming one big joke at the moment.

I've just sent off my postal vote for the Welsh Senedd elections and on one paper (there were two plus Police and Crime Commissioner) we had 13 parties to choose from, each with a group of candidates.
Each must have their own agenda of course, but that seems to be a total nonsense.

rosie1959 Fri 30-Apr-21 14:00:39

Guess there must be a lot of stupid people in the country because Boris had one hell of a landslide election and still running ahead in the polls
I have always liked him so must be one of the stupid but Keir Starmer makes my skin crawl far to greasy
For all his faults Johnson is ‘human’ he cocks up but as a positive attitude and energy. He could do with a bit more Maggie Thatcher when dealing with the opposition

‘Cocks up’ is that really your judgement on his many failures such as not attending COBRA meetings early on because he was too engrossed in sorting out his personal life, which I grant you was a cock up in more ways than one.

lemongrove Fri 30-Apr-21 14:13:09

Because he was too engrossed in sorting out his personal life?
Oh dear suziew you know that as a fact or are repeating something from newspapers and SM speculation.
That’s the trouble now...people think they know everything because they hear or read it somewhere.

MayBee70 Fri 30-Apr-21 14:14:33

How wonderful to have a human leader who cocks up (good description of Johnson by the way) on a regular basis in the middle of a pandemic.

I know he missed Cobra meetings, know he was holed up in Chequers, do you accept it was fine he behaved like this?

The majority of people who voted in the 2019 GE DIDN'T vote for Johnson. Can we apply the word 'stupid' to people who don't understand this?

lemongrove Fri 30-Apr-21 14:19:58

Cock ups? Holed up? Is this some kind of innuendo?

Gossamerbeynon1945 Fri 30-Apr-21 14:21:45

PippaZ. Sorry I am not accusing you of anything. I can't do links but it is in Chat and called "What do the Labour Party need to do to stop its slow death"
Hope you find it.
