Hopefully some leadership on display.

That’s simply not true JaneJudge though I realise it’s what you wish to be true.
Watching Johnson last night I wondered aloud why he couldn’t always be as clear in speech ( no jokes/ Latin or umming and erring) because he obviously can do it, and can be serious too.Combing his hair would be good but we can’t have everything.

you must have watched someone or something else

rosie1959 Tue 14-Dec-21 07:37:53

I rewatched both addresses this morning
From Johnson informative and pretty hard hitting I could find no reason for not understanding exactly what he was saying.
Starmer was also ok a little more like a party political announcement in disguise but nothing wrong with it
One of the differences I felt was that Johnson was talking to you and Starmer less so

Some twitter responses to the speech

@marktudball said: "Seen more life in the local mortuary, if blancmange could talk it would be Keir. #kierstarmer."

@rushton_sarah added: "I am a Labour supporter but #kierstarmer made his address with all the passion of someone announcing the 5.45 has arrived from Grantham."

^But he does lack charisma, which sadly now is what politicians are judged on. Boris has committed a whole raft of acts that lack integrity, but still he hangs on^.

He might, but he did appear statesmanlike imo.

I thought he is just what we need.

In the same vein as Biden really, no charisma, boring to listen too. You need some character to get people to listen, and he has non. My family to yours, utter tosh from another liberal elite.

Jamie Oliver has just said ^From my family, to yours - have a lovely Chritmas

Yes he said it with joy and meaning, not as an after thought, after watching his programme, made me feel there is some sunshine out there.

Lincslass Tue 14-Dec-21 08:01:28

My grandad had hair like that, couldn’t do a thing with it. If anyone had said he looked drunk and unkempt I would certainly have given them what for.

Galaxy Tue 14-Dec-21 08:03:55

Liberal elite grin. Conpated to the man if the people that is Johnson.

MerylStreep Tue 14-Dec-21 08:03:57

if blancmange could talk it would be Kier Starmer
That is evil, but so so funny. PMSL. ??

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 08:08:33

I don't think people have ever been so divided.
Mind you, we've never had a pm asking people if they've been to peppa pig world before...

Whitewavemark2 Tue 14-Dec-21 08:09:40

The clear advantage that Starmer had, was, that he isn’t Johnson.

Lack of trust in Johnson has become a real issue in the country, so what was needed was the same message but coming from someone known to have integrity and honesty as part of their character.

Starmer can deliver that.

The message was a serious one. It is about saving lives.

It was delivered in a serious and statesmanlike way. No bells and whistles - that would have been totally inappropriate.

The message was delivered and understood.

I saw plenty of positive statements about it on twitter, too.

At least Starmer didn't spring a complete surprise on the hollowed out NHS and expect them to achieve the impossible by yesterday...

I thought he did fine.

Lucca Tue 14-Dec-21 08:51:17

I couldn’t give a monkey’s about Starmer’s supposed lack of charisma if he has integrity, just as I wouldn’t care about Johnson’s regrettable appearance and delivery if he had some !

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 08:54:11

I thought he did fine, too, Maizie*.
I'm just representing both views.

Anniebach Tue 14-Dec-21 08:57:24

Agree Lucca

They all ‘do fine’ until they get into government at which point doing fine goes out the window and the real self emerges.

No we always knew that Johnson has a severely flawed personality. It is just that many people mistook his flaws for a joke or fun.

Elegran Tue 14-Dec-21 09:23:32

If you were in a bus, in a snowstorm, going along an unsurfaced road that wound past sheer cliffs, which would you prefer to be driving, an extrovert who hadn't passed his driving test, signalled that he was turning one way and at the last minute swerved to the other, and kept turning round to clown about and make sure you were watching him or a reserved introvert with advanced vehicle handling skills, who drove at a controlled speed, signalled his manoevres in plenty of time (and did what he said he would) postponed playing to the gallery until he could do so safely, and never took his eyes off the road and its dangers?

The choice will be yours at the next election. Choose wisely, we are all in this bus.

I’m not only talking about Boris Johnson. I can think of several others in recent history who are similar. Blair being one. The mask slips once they’re in office.

MayBee70 Tue 14-Dec-21 09:40:34

So, apart from Iraq, what did Blair promise and not deliver? Did we suffer from years of austerity?

Barmeyoldbat Tue 14-Dec-21 09:42:57

What has charisma or even boring got to do with being a decent, honest hopefully a future leader.

Lies and evasiveness. Years of austerity due to ‘no money left’ clear enough for you ?

If you had not posted the last 4 words of your post. Then is is deserving of an answer. As it stands - not so.

But it really is time the 'no money left' myth is put to bed. Apart from the fact that it was meant as a joke (one that has been made before by outgoing government ministers) it was utter nonsense as governments, being the issuer of currency, can never 'run out' of money. Apart from that fact, the outgoing Labour government left a country well on the road to recovery after the financial shock caused by the Global financial Crisis. it was tory 'austerity' that plunged us back into a depression which took years to recover from. Just check this with any reputable economist.

In fact, if it hadn't been for the prompt action of Gordon Brown and his Chancellor, Darling, many people in the UK would have woken up to find their bank accounts completely emptied...

It's a shame that you have so bought into the tory myth that you think 'clear enough for you' is a killer statement. It's not. It's just childish and ignorant.

I won't rehearse the positive achievements of the Blair government, a quick google will find plenty of evidence.
