Emmanuel Macron intends to ‘piss off’ the unvaccinated.

The plan is to make life as difficult as possible for the five million unvaccinated in France.
From the 15th January they will be unable to enter cafes restaurants, theatres and cinemas.
His use of language has of course caused ‘outrage’ from some quarters.

I’m no fan of the man but I am in full agreement with him over this.

He's misread his room using such an adolescent term but the sentiment is sound in my view. I have one DS vehemently refusing to get vaxxed despite overtures from lots close to him to try and get him to see the facts and benefits and I'm not saying anything more as I love him and don't want to lose his confidence. BUT he really annoys me with his stupid babyish 'logic' and I don't know where the ell he got it from! To slowly and surely restrict and eventually constrict the lives of those refusing on a whim may be the only way to get them to even entertain the idea of getting vaxxed. Either they take the plunge or life - as they know it Jim- ceases to be.?!

I think most of France is with him on this he is a strategist and used the word on purpose so as to provoke a reaction. The word is very very widely used in spoken French today.

Theoddbird Thu 06-Jan-22 12:26:51

What has upset me about people not getting vaccinated is that 80% of those in hospital with covid are unvaccinated. They are taking up spaces and putting stress on the NHS.

As far as a swear word being used by Emmanuel Macron...I am sure it was done in absolute frustration. I can't understand why such a fuss is being made about it. I never swear but can understand why he did...

This may be the first time in my life that I am almost grateful to have Johnson as PM instead of some other European leaders. I am sure this feeling will pass. It is never a good idea to demonise a section of society.

Demonise? Bit hysterical? Those refuseniks aren't bothered about possibly causing the death of an innocent unable to be vaxxed due to issues, are they? You don't know what you're talking about, demonise indeed!?

Mummer Thu 06-Jan-22 12:31:03

Quite, no vax? No pub/eatery/cinema/ flight/ in fact no anything that involves mingling with lots of other people who have often gone against their own instincts and bravely took the medicine to try and save lives and not just their own either. I was a bit ervous but thought wtf I've had worse to protect meself and others!

He could have just said " if you are going to behave irresponsibly then I am going to make your life more difficult", but I think " I am going to piss you off" has had more effect. The polls show a majority approve of what he said.

Piss off is the correct translation in this context Casdon. Macron also said that if you act irresponsibly that you are not a citizen. Behaving as a citizen is fundamental to life in France; if you see an accident then you have to stop; if you see someone in distress then you have to help. I hadn't understood how fundamental fraternity and the rights and duties of citizens are, until I lived here.
It is one of the things I like most about France.

Agree with you Mamie and he said this in an interview with a newspaper the Parisian.
I'm suprised he used such a word and wish he hadn't but I
agree with him. This covid situation is never ending. My
daughter and grandaughter came down with it last weekend, they are both fine now , it wasn't too serious, neither of them
are vaccinated, we've had some cross words over that.

Good for him!

No they're not. No they're not. No they're not.

How many times?

I am very calm thanks mummer, you sound a bit agitated though.

I'm absolutely in agreement with making life as difficult as possible for those who choose not to be vaccinated. I think that the voluntarily unvaccinated should be made to stay away from other people, should have to have their groceries delivered and should not be allowed in shops, pubs, restaurants or on public transport.
It is perfectly true that fewer people seem to be dying of the new variant but they are still dying.
I also believe that publicly advocating antivaccination should be made a criminal offence. In some cases it is killing people - manslaughter in effect.
Obviously some people can't be vaccinated for one reason or anothers but their numbers are vanishingly small and they will have to keep themselves sheltered until the pandemic is no longer a threat to the vulnerable, of whom there are very many in our population.

Alegrias1 Thu 06-Jan-22 13:15:16

Perhaps they should be made to wear badges, maybe yellow stars on their coats, what do you think?

Or all made to stay in camps, that would work.

Good for him! At least there is one politician who is prepared to tell it like it is and put the safety of the citizens above sucking up to voters.

These unvaccinated people are not being demonised; they are just being told that there are some things they will not be able to do, for the safety of the majority.

I am not allowed to get on a bus and wave a gun around - I am not being demonised; I am being told what cannot be done for the safety of others.

Totally agree, and really like the analogy.

EllanVannin Thu 06-Jan-22 13:20:57

I felt more and more like a leper when I saw this. Because I only had 1 jab a year ago---which made me damned ill for the whole of February, I feel as though I've been cast out of society completely. What next for me a Hazmat suit ?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 06-Jan-22 13:26:54

I have no opinion on M. Macron, do not think that swearing at your citizens is an appropriate thing to do.

This is mandatory vaccination by the back door.

Saggi Thu 06-Jan-22 13:27:18

All nonesense…… my daughter…son in law…. grandson…. and granddaughter all had their jabs. I’ve had my triple dose …. my friend and husband had their three doses …. We’ve all had Covid AFTER the jabs. No more for most people than a bad cold! Just like the annual flu epidemic …. only takes out the people ( usually elderly) with underlying health problems!

Saggi Thu 06-Jan-22 13:29:10

I dont like the word ‘mandatory’ about any action by government. Have none of you been awake and listening these past 2 years!!

Alegrias1 Thu 06-Jan-22 13:31:49

only takes out the people ( usually elderly) with underlying health problems!

There goes Gransnet's core demographic then....

Is idiotic a word we're allowed to use on GN?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 06-Jan-22 13:36:06

I sympathise EV but perhaps you would be far more ill, needing intubation, even die, if you were to catch covid. I felt appalling after having my first jab and dreaded the second but there were no side effects at all with it and just a bit achy after the booster. I really do urge you to talk it over with your GP.

Why not?wink I use it sometimes and think it often.

Unfortunately I think a lot of people would be happy to go down that route.
Psychoanalysists will have a field day in the future about life under Covid and how it takes the public mind.

kjmpde Thu 06-Jan-22 13:52:39

As the vaccine does not stop you from a) catching Covid and b) passing covid to others
then why should people be forced to have it? if you read the wording on the NHS website it clearly states "SHOULD" stop you catching covid or transferring it to others. the words do not state WILL NOT ... Years ago i worked in a shop and people used to come in and ask for NON FAT ice cream but in actual fact the label was NON DAIRY FAT . people need to read the actual words .

kjmpde Thu 06-Jan-22 13:53:54

the reaction to the vaccine ultimately caused my brother's death. so i share you concern. 98% safe is not 100% safe

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 06-Jan-22 13:55:28

I think most people have understood for a long time that the vaccine lessens your chance of serious illness kjmpde. The fewer people are hospitalised the better for all of us.

Joesoap Thu 06-Jan-22 13:58:21

I didnt hear the man, but can gather by the thread today it wasnt very polite.Cant stand the man, but his remark has caused a few comments on here so its going to be effective I am sure.
