Boris and the Ukraine.

Before expanding on the headline, I firstly want to say how absolutely dreadful the situation is in the Ukraine at the moment. My heart goes out to all the people that have found themselves caught up in war.
I found myself wondering about Boris….. And pose the question: Just as the Falklands war saved Maggie, do you think the Ukraine has ‘saved’ Boris?

I like Mrs Brown’s Boys and David Baddiel. Is there some sort of judgement to made about me because I like both?

I will say I don’t think Mrs Brown’s Boys is as funny now as it used to be!

Casdon Mon 07-Mar-22 15:07:52

Not from me maddyone we all like different comedians, but what is infuriating is when somebody says a comedian (or whoever) is rubbish just because they personally don’t find them funny. There should be room for all tastes.

maddyone Mon 07-Mar-22 15:11:25

Indeed there should Casdon. It’d be boring if we were all alike.

maddyone Mon 07-Mar-22 15:12:20

We seem to have moved a long way from Boris and the Ukraine though don’t we?

Coastpath Mon 07-Mar-22 15:56:18

I would hope that people who read my many, daily posts on Gransnet will know that I'm not a person given to 'sneering condescension'.

Back to Boris and the subject of this thread. This from the BBC today. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60642100

I haven’t made ‘unfounded allegations’ about David Baddiel. Stop over egging the pudding to make yourselves feel better. I, and many others I know don’t find him funny - at all. He’s a public figure so fair game and I doubt he reads this and if he did, it would be nothing compared to what some critics have said.

However, a thinly veiled personal attack was made on me ie I’d be more suited to watching MBB’s and don’t pretend otherwise. Own it. The inference being I’m some knuckle dragging numbskull that doesn’t appreciate DB. I won’t tolerate it.

It’s always the same people too. Do you ever stop to look at yourselves and your behaviour? How many of you are jumping on the bandwagon? Hunting in packs. You should know I don’t back off. I have my opinions and I’ll state them. If you don’t like them, tough but don’t resort to these snide and nasty digs. Seems the mean girls never grow up.

No wonder there’s many name changes but the character stays the same.

Coastpath Mon 07-Mar-22 18:35:46

I am sorry if I upset you Tickingbird. It was not my intention and I apologise.

Lucca Mon 07-Mar-22 18:38:48

Tickingbird I think you have honestly read this all wrong. Nobody but nobody was implying any of those things.

Casdon Mon 07-Mar-22 18:40:14

You did make unfounded allegations about David Baddiel tickingbird. You said:

Referring to David Baddiel as a comedian is comedic.I think it’s generally accepted he’s a failed (badly) comedian’.

That is unfounded, it’s patently untrue, and it was an unnecessary thing to say. You compounded those nasty remarks with further digs at him. You need to own your misjudgement, because this whole diversion was caused by you.

I don't watch Mrs. Brown's Boys, always say it isn't my humour, although I've rated Brendan O'Carroll when I've heard him speak.

However, I once caught a bit where she gave herself a Brazilian in the cupboard under the stairs. I'm afraid I became hysterical. I laughed so much the dog was worried for me.

tickingbird Mon 07-Mar-22 20:36:50

Coastpath. Thank you.

Dinahmo Mon 07-Mar-22 20:53:18

This is off topic I know but what do you think Dave Allen would have made of Johnson (and the current situation)?

25Avalon Tue 08-Mar-22 11:16:54

Ailidh I know what you mean. I have found some Mrs B’s Bs very funny but rarely watch these days. I liked it where she said she’d been to elocution classes where she learnt to say ‘That’s nice” instead of “f*ck off.” That became a catch phrase in my circles. So Putin my message to you is “That’s nice.”

Zoejory Tue 08-Mar-22 11:27:48

Humour is subjective. Not all of us laugh at the same things

I rather like Russell Brand but I know that a lot of people think he's rather awful.

Which is fine really.

I like DB. I don't like MBB. I love reading The Daily Mash, but appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea.

As for a comedian as PM I think I'll go with Jack Whitehall

Other comedians are available.

As for the OP, yes, I do think that Boris's bacon may have been saved. For now. Any mention of cakes and parties are rather absurd at the moment. In my opinion.

mokryna Tue 08-Mar-22 12:10:53

No. He is a disgrace, the Tory party has had so much money donated to them by the Russian oligarchs. These oligarchs will have to register UK-based property in a bid to prevent them from shifting their assets out of the country but BJ has given them SIX months to shift their money out of the country overriding Labours 28 days.

I’m glad Boris is in charge right now. I can’t see any other politician of any flavour being as decisive.

Now that is comedy

Maudi Tue 08-Mar-22 17:27:48

Well President Zelensky just thanked Boris for all his help personally.

Casdon Tue 08-Mar-22 17:49:38

I’m sure he has or will thank every country who are offering support to Ukraine, unfortunately for him that’s what he has to do now. I really feel for him.

Oh, I love it! There's a woman where I live who drives me mad! (Too long and boring a tale). I would never say fck off to her face but often feel like it. Now I can just smile and say, "That's nice!". Love it!

MayBee70 Tue 08-Mar-22 18:03:09

Johnson said that we were going to stop getting oil from Russia but that isn’t until the end of 2022. Did Patel remain seated when Zelensky was speaking or is she just very short?

MayBee70 Tue 08-Mar-22 18:04:04

….not when he was speaking but when they gave him a standing ovation….

Coastpath Tue 08-Mar-22 18:28:15

She did stand. I think she's just tiny and always wears flat shoes too.

tickingbird Tue 08-Mar-22 18:40:20

Casdon. I made no unfounded allegations. Anyone would think I accused him of being a sexual predator or similar. I stand by what I said. Shame it’s such an issue for you when there are far, far more important things in the world, especially at present. Maybe you should accept that I’m entitled to my opinion on DB. You rate him, I don’t. That’s fact not an unfounded allegation.

Delighted if it gave you a laugh GilT57. God knows we could all do with one right now. I was being entirely sincere though.

When this is all over (soon, I hope), there should be a root and branch investigation into where Russian money has gone over the past 20 years, what it has paid for and who has benefited. That should include questions about where the money has gone between sanctions being announced and the date they are applied, with explanations of why they couldn't have been applied earlier.
