Today it’s Memorial Day for MLK in the US overshadowed by the TRUMP Inauguration … wonder what he would think of US politics …

Trump is doing what he feels is best for America.
It’s now up to Starmer and Lammy to do their best for us.

The trouble is, there is no agreement as to what is best for the UK, the tories say its when we have lots of billionaires and less well off people.

Labour say its best when all people, especially those less well off, have access to public services such as the NHS

The trouble is, there is no agreement as to what is best for the UK

... and that, as you've so succinctly pointed out, is the problem - and has been for decades now.

Further, since the interests of one demographic will conflict with those of another, it would seem there's no chance of agreement either.

In my (simplistic) view there are two options for a successful economy.

If that relies on its workforce, because the wealth-creators do actually need a workforce, then you either invest in the nation's people by providing a well-funded welfare and education system - if you believe a nation's prosperity rests on a healthy and happy workforce - along with robust competitive Capitalism; or you subdue them into penury and labour where the winner takes all, and the devil picks up the hindmost.

And, since I've read so many comments like, "well, life's not fair" - suggesting that's the way they think it is, should be, and will always be, where often individualism - and greed - is championed, then I think we're heading down the latter course. I think the fabric of society has been disintegrating for decades, and will continue to fall apart because of all divisions.

I don't envy any party attempting to unite or decide "what is best for the UK".

Again, Dickens,

Well said.

In fact, I read somewhere …

“Some see business as a predatory tiger to be shot, others as a fat cow to be milked.
Very few see it for what it is; the strong horse that pulls the whole wagon"

I think you are off your rocker mate.

I rather liked Melania's outfit, heels and all! However, I do think she looked a little like cabin crew...!

Trump authorized $500 billion for private sector AI development today.

Guess where that money is going to?

Also, for what it is worth, they have removed The Constitution from the White House website.

What?
😯

imaround Tue 21-Jan-25 23:31:35

Yep. That page has been removed. So has the women's health rights page.

The optimistic side of me wants to think they are doing a refresh of the website.

He just blocked the rule that stops ICE from rounding up people in churches, hospitals and schools.

I really like this site, because it's interesting to read perspectives of people in Great Britian. I can't find a site similar to this in the U.S.
As a third generation American, I am appalled that this racist, fascist is once again in office. I'm old enough to remember MLK, his peaceful preaching and of course his assassination. I'm very troubled and saddened that this beast is in office again. I'm ashamed that a little more than half of the country voted for him. What will the next four years bring? Once again, I'll be afraid every day to see what he has done next. Just one fact alone that he pardoned more than 1,000 people charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, and commuted the sentences of leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers is, I feel, an abomination. I could go on and on. I'm 70 years old and I never thought I would witness something like this. I'm very depressed, to say the least.

He reversed Bidens ethics pledge, which stopped appointees from taking gifts from lobbyists during their term.

Apparently the "distinguished gentleman" the Representative from Georgia said she should be deported after this. She is a New Jersey native.

Appatentkybthey have removed the following pages from the White House website.

The Constitution
Women's reproductive rights
LGBTQ+ and AIDS resources

And they removed the Spanish version of the site.

Apparently, these particular pages had errors that needed to be corrected. confused

imaround Wed 22-Jan-25 01:42:59

I am not allowed to use apparently any more.

nanna8 Wed 22-Jan-25 03:03:17

The sermon was very moving and I actually think Trump was listening intently. Not so much his son, he didn’t look engaged at all. Unlike others here, I don’t think Trump is a monster. Time will tell, of course.

We need Mr Trump over here to stop the boats and control immigration.
I'm afraid the globe trotting duo won't do it.

Another day, another bit of second hand nonsense.

I felt sorry for the American people yesterday, with this comment it seems we have just as many deluded people here in the UK.

Maybe a coalition between reasonable, free thinking people needs to be formed across the Atlantic?

I thought Trump actually looked uncomfortable when she implored him to think about the children….

Yes it was a very insightful sermon…some of the other family members looked totally disinterested and smirky

Humans have migrated from one place to another, for various reasons, since the dawn of time, and will continue until the end of it.

How you organise and control that migration in a civilised world is complex - although some appear to believe it's simple and you just, for example, push boats back out to sea.

No, we don't need "Mr Trump" or anyone other foreign Mr or Mrs to organise our constitutional affairs.

Parliamentary sovereignty is a principle of the UK constitution. It makes Parliament the supreme legal authority in the UK which can create or end any law. And I don't think there are any plans to hand that over to a foreign power - wasn't that one of the reasons we left the EU? To 'take back control'?

... although I'm sure Mr Trump would be flattered by your proposal.

hmm

Dickens but we haven’t taken back control re the boat crossings ..it’s just endless …am not very impressed with our GOVERNMENT they have had time - nothing changes and leaving the EU hasn’t done us any good IMO

nanna8 Wed 22-Jan-25 12:30:42

We use our navy to stop boats coming into Australia containing people who try to circumvent the official channels. I assume the UK no longer has a navy.
