. Prime Minister sets out blueprint to turbocharge AI.
Artificial intelligence will deliver a decade of national renewal, as part of a new plan announced today (13 January 2025).

" . . in a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand by. We must move fast and take action to win the global race. . . Our plan will make Britain the world leader. " The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer

Well, I didn't see that one coming. Most people's opinions on AI are (like mine, to be honest) based on the rubbish that Facebook posters churn out using "AI for Dummies" type apps which steal bits of real posts and cobble them together to make pseudo-information.

I assume that the PM thinks we will be better off becoming the masters of this technology than its slaves or dupes. He could be right. The worst thing to do is ignore the phenomenon, know nothing of the good side of it, and be fooled by the bad side. The best path is to learn about how to use it and how to recognise when someone else is misleading us with it.

The reasoning seems to be that AI can automate and speed up production, data management and communication and improve efficiency and thus profitability.

Monica here’s a screen grab of countries ranked by AI infrastructure and leadership in the field

I have never questioned Britian's place as one of the top AI countries in the world. But all the AI companies named by Starmer in his speech are foreign owned, or dependent on major foreign investment. Starmer's speech gave us no hope that that was likely to change

What I would have like to see was a stirring speech showing how this was going to change and what was going to be done to change this situation so that at last one of our top AI companies was owned adn FINANCED in Britain.

It is meaningless tosh. Anyone can make aspirational speeches about what will happen in the future, but unless you then indicate how you intend to reach that nirvana, it is absolutely meaningless.

I am sure every other developed country has such aspirations. We heard similar speeches from various poiticians when in power about the wonders electric cars and battery plants would have in taking the economy forwards - and we can see what is happening there. The cars are made in China and the efforts to build battery plants has been disastrous.

As for our history of developing technology, yes we do - and then sell it off to the highest bidder, usually American and they make the money.

You are so right. I thought exactly the same when I heard him speak.

David49*, I think AI produced novels are currently thought to be derivative!

Unsurprisingly!

I see google search results now have an AI answer at the top. I've just asked a question about the position of decks/cabins on a particular cruise ship, and the AI answer was patently wrong. Not very encouraging.

bookwormbabe don't forget the stuff you can access easily hasn't been updated for some years now.
Maybe this has something to do with it?

DS is an academic. He is always writing papers for publication. So (tongue in cheek) he decided to see how AI could assist him. He fed a description of the subject matter of a research paper into an AI system and waited for the result.

The result was a hilarious, as NotSpaghetti says its research base was years out of date, it referred to research projects that did not exist, referenced to DS publications he had never written in journals that do not exist and its conclusions, to put it mildly, were eccentric.

Still is supplied us all with a source of innocent amusement.

For my husband's business the results were quite helpful. However the input information was correct records. He was looking for and found long trends, data baking up potential profit and loss areas. Worked well.
