Is anyone following the new series?

I watched on catch up last night and after only one episode Sheila Ferguson (one of the 3 degrees) is coming across as a right bossy boots and likes her own way. I am rather warming to Rusty Lee (who's laugh I used to find very irritating) and Amanda Barrie who seems to be quite down to earth. Blimey I was so disappointed to see how old Paul Nicolas looked, considering he was a bit of a heart throb back in the day. I am looking forward to seeing how this series goes.

Miriam Stoppard has had so much work done she has no expression left in her face, and that is not the normal hair for a woman of her age. I too was disappointed in Paul Nicholas, he has got so old. I have just read the hypocrisy and double standards in my two sentences...blush

Ana Thu 23-Feb-17 10:51:25

I'm actually finding Paul Nicholas rather attractive now I've got over the shock of how old he's got!

annodomini Thu 23-Feb-17 10:56:14

I'd congratulate Paul Nicholas on not having made the effort to make himself look younger than he really is! He has grown old gracefully, unlike Miriam Stoppard who has evidently tried a bit too hard to obliterate the signs of ageing. I'm glad Denis Taylor is in the group. Maybe he has a few too many corny jokes, but he isn't the self-obsessed prima donna that Lionel Blair is. Amanda Barrie does seem a bit lost but quite likeable. I was impressed with Bill Oddie explaining his bi-polarity. For a time, he was an embarrassment when he appeared on television but the diagnosis has allowed him to be himself again.

I am warming to Denis Taylor too, although his corny jokes would grate after a while.

Not double standards GillT57 just saying what you think. smile

Bill Oddie is coming across much nicer than I expected. Paul Nicholas is lovely. I too was shocked at how much he's aged but how daft of me to expect him to still look like the yummy, boyish charmer he was in Just Good Friends.

Sigh

Isn't Amanda Barrie in a relationship? She came out some time ago

gillybob Thu 23-Feb-17 12:21:38

I knew she was a lesbian but I don't think she has mentioned a partner in the series so far Anniebach. I quite like her and remember her mainly for Coronation Street although I know she did a few "Carry On" films too. She seems too timid to be an actress and reminds me of Bambi's mother.

Oh Ana, how could you??!

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 17:02:25

grin

Ana Thu 23-Feb-17 17:05:24

Well why not, wot? He might not be your cup of tea, but he'll do for me - reminds me a bit of Bill Nighy...wink

merlotgran Thu 23-Feb-17 17:09:32

I thought he was Bill Nighy when I saw the early trailers but then I realised it couldn't be because he was in the actual film.

wot Thu 23-Feb-17 17:11:09

Ha ha! Paul looked quiet nice in his Panama hat.

wot Thu 23-Feb-17 17:13:08

As long as the bald pates hidden! How many men would marry a woman knowing she was going to end up bald??

wot Thu 23-Feb-17 17:21:17

He has got horse teeth.

Rinouchka Thu 23-Feb-17 17:27:55

I would like to speak up for bald men! Especially those who wear their baldness with pride.

Rather a bald pate than a huge stomach anyday. Watching Lionel Blair's huge tummy being massaged was revolting, even if his condition was due to medication.

Miriam Stoppard is a dermatologist, I think, so am not surprised that she might have gone for the full lift. Weird result, however.

Ana Thu 23-Feb-17 17:29:53

Paul Nicholas is not bad. Have you been watching a different programme to the rest of us, wot? confused

Ana Thu 23-Feb-17 17:30:29

Sorry, that should have been not bald!

wot Thu 23-Feb-17 17:37:42

Well, he's got a very receding hairline . Was he in Hair? I loved that show!

gillybob Thu 23-Feb-17 22:12:07

My DH has got more hair than me, but I really don't mind bald men at all. I agree with Rinouchka I would rather a bald head than a big wobbly belly.

Ana Thu 23-Feb-17 22:16:43

And Paul Nicholas is 72 - I think most men (and some women, sadly) have receding hairlines at that age!

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 22:17:47

Yes that massage with mud and herbs ( or whatever it was) on his tum was very off putting to watch, although at least he seemed to enjoy it.

rosesarered Thu 23-Feb-17 22:20:15

My DH is only 2 years younger though Ana and has lots of hair, ( not grey either) it doesn't seem fair that some men lose it all early.

I am really enjoying this series and always find people interesting, even celebrities. Like others I was shocked to see Paul Nicholas at first but as his personality shines through I am now beginning to find him quite attractive again. Ana wink wink

I laughed out loud when I heard the doctor/healer asking Lionel Blair about his diet - enjoys his food, loves sweets, snacks on biscuits etc etc. Also he's clearly not as active as he used to be! Maybe his tummy has something to do with his treatment but honestly too much food and too little exercise .... seems pretty basic to me. Sorry if I sound mean but I have made (and still make) my own excuses too!!

I really like Denis, Amanda and Rustie who seem quite natural and I think Bill Oddie is brave and a lovely, honest man. I too would want to go off on my own from time to time if I were in that situation. I loved it when he said 'manic depression' was a more apt description than bi-polar. I have thought the same.

Miriam - well she might look odd but you can't deny her enthusiasm and excitement. Sheila, possibly the hardest to like but she is her own woman and independent. She just needs to forget about finding a man and develop her own interests.

BlueBelle Fri 24-Feb-17 06:43:53

They are certainly all showing better sides now I thought how handsome Paul looked dressed up he also looks less ill with a bit of colour on his skin he was so pale and ill looking at first, he has lovely teeth The men I think are much easier to watch than the women although I think Rustie is just a real down to earth nice person I do feel sorry for Lionel as he is very self obsessed and obviously prides himself on his fine slim figure and it's obviously on his mind the whole time His tummy is strange as it doesn't look soft and yielding like fat but almost like his organs are in the wrong place and pushing it out. . I m afraid I can't yet warm to Amanda who to me seems as if she's acting all the time or Sheila or Miriam ( who looks like Pricilla Presley) Bill is probably chubby though the medication Lithium is not a nice drug at all I like him and Dennis

I thought they were very brave going on that long train journey so worth it to see that beautiful temple but not an easy thing to do in the heat and as older folks

Alima Fri 24-Feb-17 06:54:55

I am warming more and more to the people in this group. Those of us who saw Paul in 'Enders recently will have got used to the fact he is older now! Even Bill came over as a likeable person this time. I too feel for Lionel with his distended stomach, he was always such a slip of a thing. I like Rusty and Dennis too. Always liked Amanda since Carry On and Corrie days. Her partner is Hilary Bonner the crime author. I expect even Miriam's face will seem ok by the end of the series.
