R.I.P. Joe

Yes poor old Joe. I agree that TA has now become a contemporary drama in a rural setting but I am still sentimental about it. Can recall first listening with my grandad, a real old Shropshire country chap. He wouldn't recognise it now, but hey ho, nothing stays the same. Now we have Nocasha and her ilk!

I was really sad to hear about the death of Edward Kelsey, the actor who played Joe Grundy. It was lovely to hear the actress who plays Jill telling us how different he was from Joe in real life, a consummate actor without doubt.

Joe (98) was just a year younger than my mother so I was surprised to hear that Edward Kelsey was only 88. Too soon, but the great character of Joe will be one of those who helps weave the history of "The Archers". With his ageing pony Bartleby, taking Joe out and about in the trap (saving the planet before the rest of us got started) and his grumbling about his farmers lung and the way life had treated the Grundy's he could never cover his love of his family. The Cider Club will never be the same for those of us who are addicts but, what has now become "a contemporary drama in a rural setting" will still remain "an everyday story of country folk" when we think of Joe.

He's gone from having pre wedding reservations about Nocasha, to telling her all his misgivings about Tom. All grist to her scheming mill. Then he lets on about Tom's secret honeymoon plans, this isn't going to end well.

Jo Grundy Grundy will be missed by all the Archer's followers. Sadly he finally succumbed to his " farmer's lung".

He joins a list of wonderful characters; Walter, Julia, Nelson, Nigel to name a few.

The farmer's lung got Joe in the end. He will be missed by all us Archers fans. Always good for a laugh.

Nelson, Walter, Nigel, Julia, Joe all cheered the programme up imo.

I’m addicted to the Archers and very sad to hear of the death of the actor playing Joe Grundy, will they let his character die? Re: Natasha, I agree that she may have a hidden agenda but Tom does seem a bit ‘wet’

Phoenix I think the actor was 87 or 88. Joe was in his 90s though.
Joe Grundy was one of my favourite characters. The conversation he had with Brian that made him decide to plead guilty to the chemical dumping was one of the most moving scenes I have heard on The Archers

In rl was quite an age, (97) how wonderful to still be working and doing such a great job at that age!

Now, back to the plotline........True, but what will happen to Daphne and Adele? Not to mention Bartleby and the newer pony?

If the scriptwriters have any sense, they will have his coffin carried to St Stephens on a cart pulled by Bartleby.

Wondering how they will feed it in, when the actor that played Phil died in rl, Jill came back from an outing (trip, not of a gay person) to find him dead in his armchair.

Wouldn't think they would use the same scenario with Joe, but no doubt they will make play of the fact that he died while still living at Grange Farm.
