So have switched onto Netflix - wanted to see for myself what the 'fuss' is all about as many diverse opinions on this couple on here and other social platforms ...as well as the media with 'experts' who state this and that etc etc...

Today’s Guardian and the i both had excellent and measured articles on the H&M Netflix thing. Yasmin Alibhai Brown in particular has written a very good piece. I love her description of Piers Morgan and Dan Wootton as shrill right-wingers who are acting like authoritarian imams.

Thank you, I'll try to take a look later.
Not sure who Dan Wootton is but no doubt I'll be enlightened by the article!

FannyCornforth Fri 09-Dec-22 18:10:42

Dan Wooton is an insufferable fool

Oh, yes, him!

Gives New Zealand a bad name.

Haven't watched it but here's my opinion of something I didn't see.

62Granny was talking about the picture of the curtsey she had seen, not the programme.

Yes I know that.

A still picture from a scene that was a few minutes long.

And yet she seems to think she can understand exactly what was going on, without seeing the whole thing or hearing the words. What a skill to have.

(Sorry to talk about you in the third person 62Granny)

My goodness, some of the comments from USA readers are scathing!

They make Gransnetters look like pussycats with sheathed claws. 😲

Not a fan of M and H, so haven't watched Netflix, but seen one or two clips from it. I saw a look on Harry's face when Megan was really going on about something about the late Queen, the look was as if a penny had dropped, as if she had overplayed her hand. The have to put on a united front as they have burnt their boats. but that intoxicating passion they had can easily turn as its done in many people in the past.

I think there is a code of conduct that is followed, certainly within the school grounds where the first day photos are shot. A protocol is followed.

So as long as it's done a certain way it's OK to point numerous cameras at children who have really no idea about what is happening?
Even if what you say is true Harry still hated being photographed and probably didn't want his children to have the same experience. As I said Californian law prohibits the publication of photos of under 16s. that's real child protection

Apparently Harry asked Meghan, ‘you know how to curtsy?’
And she thought it was
I honestly don’t know why a little bob down is so ridiculous when meeting such an amazing woman of stature as Queen Elizabeth.

I would imagine Meghan doesn't want to curtsey to anyone but would rather they curtsey to her.

Chestnut Fri 09-Dec-22 23:41:27

Whether this is true I don't know, but it's been reported that all the A Listers (Obabas, Oprah, Clooneys etc.) have been very quiet and are not showing any support.

Joseanne Sat 10-Dec-22 00:16:07

Yep, they've got more sense! But then they're not British.

nanna8 Sat 10-Dec-22 00:20:32

I really tried to watch this stuff because of all the comments but 10 -15 minutes was enough. So boring, so slow. Rather watch the grass grow.

I really cannot understand why anyone would subscribe to Netflix, putting money in super wealthy pockets . It's all over the news anyway so as its news we all have opinions. If the cash dried so would this over priviledged, out of touch couple. If people have spare money, give it to the food banks or homeless.

Galaxy Sat 10-Dec-22 07:41:52

People subscribe to Netflix because it gives them the programmes they want.

How long can M&H sustain their lifestyle relying on their past experiences with the royal family. They are big spenders so will need lots of cash and without any real skills, especially on Harry's part, what will they do? Meghan could have another go at acting I suppose, but would that bring in enough? I am talking years into the future.

FannyCornforth Sat 10-Dec-22 09:23:47

Hilary Rose has written an article for The Times magazine; ‘What next for Harry, the Prince of Montecito’.
I’m just about to read it

In this day and age curtsying to anyone is hilarious to anyone not gaslit into thinking certain people because of an accident of birth are superior beings.

Sparklefizz Sat 10-Dec-22 09:33:36

Yes... loads of photos in the papers/online this morning of people curtseying to Meghan and her beaming down at them.

Reminds me of all the times I’ve seen the Queen, King Charles etc being greeted by the Māori and other tribal leaders in the world. Totally different to our customs but always taken with good grace and impeccable manners. Showing respect for other cultures and customs. Can you imagine if one of the RF appeared on tv mocking the Māori greeting?

Jaffacake2 Sat 10-Dec-22 09:55:04

I don't really understand why the royal family continue the performance of protocol with their relatives. I see why it is important to carry on the formalities in public because that maintains the role and hierarchy of a monarchy. But why curtsey and bow to your parents and grandparents indoors ? Bizarre family rituals

icanhandthemback Sat 10-Dec-22 09:58:00

Ailidh, things stay on Netflix for quite a time. They have a rolling programme with things being added all the time. You usually get notice of what is disappearing a month before they go. We dip in and out of other streaming services but Netflix is our constant.

Nobody brings racism and bullying on themselves.

Full stop.

THIS ^^. Spot on!

merlotgran Sat 10-Dec-22 09:58:37

I think Meghan, smiling at people curtsying to her is more out of bemused embarrassment. Even Princess Anne has said she finds the bobbing up and down unnecessary.

She shouldn’t have taken the mickey out of her own greeting to the Queen though. It has infuriated a lot of people who understand that it’s a mark of respect that’s been a part of our cultural history for centuries. No wonder Harry looked stony faced!

If I had been fortunate enough to meet the Queen, I would have definitely curtsied, out of tradition and respect for the role of monarch.
Nothing to do with deference or a sense of inferiority.
I don’t believe that Elizabeth Windsor thought that she was superior to us lot.
Her popularity is testament to her stoic pragmatism.
It’s noteworthy that King Charles has been egged on two occasions (even before he has been crowned).
The Queen never had anything like that as far as I know.
The DoE said that she took applauding crowds in her stride because she believed the applause was for the role and not her for her personally.
I’m on the fence re the monarchy, but I am a great one for tradition.

The Hilary Rose article is very long

The whole ststem is totally bizarre Jaffacake2.
I watched a lady curtsey as a line of royals passed her. She just bobbed up down up down ..continually. Just weird!

Galaxy Sat 10-Dec-22 10:19:06

I have met the queen as a child and certainly didnt curtsey, I wouldnt have as an adult either.
