How much is too much for a top?

I love this top. I keep looking at it. But it is totally impractical and too expensive. But it's lovely. Would you pay £165 for it? What's the most you have ever paid for a top?

trisher....if you love it, really want it and can afford it, then go ahead and buy it.Chances are that you will love it for years.
I’m not buying clothes until next year now ( possibly not even then!) at least that’s what I tell myself, but like Callistemon I want a deep red long cardi ( berry coloured) so If I see one I will no doubt get it, despite my best intentions.
Having grown up in a poor household, I have never been able to bring myself to pay a fortune for clothes, and seem to have managed up to now.
There are special occasions of course, when you want to look a bit special, and maybe that deserves paying more for.

It is entirely a matter of personal taste and personal budget. Like others I now try and buy only natural fibres or viscose, which is a fabric made from cellulose from trees.

My personal budget would run to this top, if I really wanted it and knew I would get a lot of use from it. Personal taste says I would only pay that for a really exceptional woollen sweater, but as yet I have seen nothing good enough to tempt me.

My first child was an autumn baby and knowing I would be doing a lot of time pushing pram outside in the following years I went out and spent £20 on a really warm wool winter full length coat. £20 in 1971 was probably worth considerably more than £165 in current values and I never regretted it. That coat withstood seven years of hard wear and I was back at work before I had to replace it.

I would buy it for a special occasion. Too much for everyday wear. I wouldnt pay more than £60 for that.

kircubbin2000 Wed 09-Sept-20 16:49:01

I think the top is awful! The most I paid was £200 for a cashmere top some years ago when daughter had must moved to London. She persuaded me it was a bargain because of the label and the fact she had bargained the price down. I rarely wear it and was always afraid of spilling something on it and now that I don't go out much I probably won't wear it this winter.

Dibbydod Wed 09-Sept-20 16:54:48

No way would I pay that sort of money for a top , what if after you bought it it didn’t quite fit right or didn’t suit your shape or the material is not as nice expected . The most I’ve paid for a top is £40 as I find after a couple of wears the novelty wears of and it’ becomes just another garment hanging in the wardrobe .

fevertree Wed 09-Sept-20 17:03:26

That is so true Dibby - the number of times I've just had to have something and then a few months later I am over it grin

The top in the OP is nice, but I wouldn't pay £165 for it.

No, very hard to team it with other things (get me, using terms like "team!) Plus too distinctive, as in "Oh, she's wearing that top again".

Doubt if the cost to wear calculation would come out in its favour.

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 17:42:24

.Witz would it bobble ( if you bet wore it) do you think ?

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 17:43:14

if you were to wear it ?

dogsmother Wed 09-Sept-20 17:50:42

YES!
If it makes you smile and you can afford it to buy it then you must buy it.
Remember this life is not a rehearsal and you only ever regret the things you didn’t do ......

Alima Wed 09-Sept-20 17:58:24

Yes, the top in the picture is lovely, will you be buying it trisher? I wouldn’t even contemplate paying that much for a top, suit or anything. Must be a real skinflint but just no. I remember in the late 80s a friend bought a lovely trouser suit costing £70. How much?? That has stayed with me all these years, must have made a heck of an impression.

Witzend Wed 09-Sept-20 18:01:30

No, I don’t think it’s the sort of thing that bobbles, @suziewoozie.

trisher Wed 09-Sept-20 18:28:53

I think I'm going to hang on and see if it goes in the sale.

Callistemon Wed 09-Sept-20 18:35:35

You could pay £50 for a top and only wear it once.

This one looks like a "go-to" top if you're going somewhere special and probably won't date (just as well at the moment!).

Jane43 Wed 09-Sept-20 18:52:43

You have obviously fallen in love with the top Trisher so go for it. I’m a ‘blend into the background’ person so wouldn't have the courage to wear it but would love to be the kind of person who could carry it off. I think the people who have responded by saying they don’t like it or, even worse, that they think it is awful are very rude. After you took the trouble to post the picture you must feel deflated, I would.

Grandmafrench Wed 09-Sept-20 18:54:09

I think it looks lovely on the model. If I wanted it as much as you do.... might pay that for something for a special occasion, but then expect to get a load of wear out of it. On the other hand, I think that £40, for example, is far too much for a top which hangs in a cupboard and that you might wear twice -so for me it's all about the' cost to wear ratio' really.

Some things do cost a fortune...cashmere, silk, but as I've said, I would always try to find something like that in a sale or buy it as something classic, knowing that it wouldn't date, would earn lots of compliments, make me feel good each wearing and thus make me feel that it was money very well spent. Not sure there are fixed rules, though. Just do what makes you happy!

Iam64 Wed 09-Sept-20 18:58:32

trisher - treat yourself. Buy the top. You clearly want it, I bet you aren't spending much currently, we none of us are going out, cinema's, restaurants, treats generally so treat yourself and wear it lots, even if it's only round the house

Marydoll Wed 09-Sept-20 19:04:57

Trisher, I hope the negative comments about the top havent put you off buying it.

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 19:06:55

What’s the brand trisher?

DillytheGardener Wed 09-Sept-20 19:18:52

Trisher, good idea wait for the sale, and keep an eye on eBay incase someone wants to sell their.

I generally spend the most on core pieces, like jeans that make my waist look trim ( two pregnancies have left me with an apple body type) , coats and blazers. I think items that make me look trimmer a worth the extra pennies. Statement pieces I buy from Oasis or similar, I do like pink, leopard print and sparkles in spring and summer. Mink is my favourite, so I wait for their sales in great anticipation. ?

Chewbacca Wed 09-Sept-20 19:18:53

I love the colours in your top trisher but, like others, the price is well beyond my budget. I can't remember the last item of clothing that I bought. I did, however, succumb to 2 pairs of Hotter shoes, thanks to Maw posting about their amazing sale, some weeks back.

Iam64 Wed 09-Sept-20 19:26:36

Our hotter shop has closed. I can probably buy on line because I know which of their styles fit me. It isn't the same though, as wandering the shop to decided what to try on...

Chewbacca Wed 09-Sept-20 19:54:42

Hotter in Chester has gone too Iam64. And that was always a part of my shopping ritual when I go there; Lakeland, Hotter, Brown's of Chester and then Sergio's for a long lunch!

DanniRae Wed 09-Sept-20 19:58:20

I agree with all those who have said that people will notice that you have worn it a few times before and you've got to wear it a few times to make it worth that amount of money!

And apparently I am going to be rude but I don't like it anyway but that doesn't matter because I am not buying it grin

grannyrebel7 Wed 09-Sept-20 20:10:17

Trisher go for it if you like it! The only time I've ever spent loads on clothes ( in the region of £400) was for my two kids' weddings. I love clothes buying though, but tend to keep to under £50.
