I remember it well, I got mine pieced on my 13th birthday, went to the jewellers with my mum and felt very brave sitting there waiting for the needle, ? was disappointed I couldn’t have nice gold studs though , had to have the awful thin hoop, felt very grown up and couldn’t wait until Xmas few months later to get my first gold studs

Seven, and I didn’t want it done, but mother insisted, so my dad held me down whilst the jeweller did it. They were always crusty and bleeding and getting caught on things (I wasn’t allowed studs, only big bloody hoops) and just urgh.

I had to take them out for PE at secondary school, so I took the bloody things out first PE day and “forgot” to ever put them back in again. Good riddance

Eighteen just before I got married, then suffered from painful earlobes during honeymoon. I haven’t worn them for twenty odd years now because I started allergies.

I was 10, I really wanted them done. I love having pierced ears.

27. My sister, a junior hospital doctor, did it with a hypodermic syringe during a quiet spell in A&E.

About 19. My mum disapproved and didnt speak to me for a couple of days!

22. It had never crossed my mind to have them done, but I went to the Ideal Home Show (is that what it was called?? At Olympia) and a friend bet me the price that I was too scared to get it done with a new-fanged gadget on display. It must have been the first of the modern style machines.

My ears hurt for weeks afterwards. I mostly wear the same earrings all the time, it was a pair of pearl ones but they broke in lockdown and I’ve got plain hoops now.

17yrs
Friend and I went to a chiropodist who advertised the procedure.
Friend had hers done, no problem . My turn, he used a type of puncher that went through the ear lobe. When I heard the crunch sound I fainted !!
He asked if I wanted to continue, once I had come round. Yes ,I said 2 nd ear no problem. The sleepers were put through with the "punch gun".
Still pierced at 72 years of age, love my earrings

I never fancied having my ears pierced but my sister constantly nagged me to get them done. My DM had hers pierced in her 40s, shortly after her mother died and also urged me to get mine done. Many years passed until my sister gave up and bought me a lovely pair of clip-ons for Christmas. Over dinner she asked if I was wearing them. I replied by saying "Guess?" That is when it dawned on her that with my long straight hair, (which refuses to stay 'UP') no one ever sees my ears anyway, especially as I now wear both glasses and hearing aids all the time.

I never wanted pierced ears. It seems very primitive somehow. In the past when my hair was quite short I wore clip-ons which looked pretty enough. Now, although my hair is still fairly short, it does cover my ears.

I was 36. I went back to college on a medical secretarial course after having four children, and I was the only mature student in a group of 16 year olds. They were horrified I hadn't had it done, and dragged me out one lunchtime to a local jewellers, who were a bit brutal, to say the least!

BrightandBreezy Thu 29-Apr-21 01:30:51

I was about 38. Really liked the earring styles at the time but kept putting off getting done. Would never go out without earrings in now.

Loislovesstewie Thu 29-Apr-21 05:41:47

16,I am never without earrings. I have a huge number including several rather pretty Niello ones, that I am rather fond of. People always know to buy earrings for me as gifts. Probably because I drop such subtle hints!

muffinthemoo what an awful story. You poor thing sad

I had mine pierced when I was 12 at the hairdressers (her name was Gill. Funny the things that you remember...)

Up until recently I had two in one ear and one in the other.
But DH pierced them again for me last year!
I bought an earpiercing gun from Amazon. It was very simple.
So now I have two in one ear and three in the other.
I only like teeny tiny studs or small huggy hoops. Always gold ones.

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Apr-21 06:11:39

My late Nan had hers pierced when she was 70!

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Apr-21 06:14:32

I had my nose pierced when I was about 23. That didn't last long. It was a bloody nuisance and kept popping out.

grannytilly2511 Thu 29-Apr-21 06:16:37

16 th birthday , wasn’t allowed until then .had them done at the hairdressers.
Sleepers were quite painful to turn around at first , couldn’t wait to have my gold studs put in , have worn earrings ever since

DanniRae Thu 29-Apr-21 07:05:24

I was 16 and had them done at a local jewellers - one became infected so had to take the sleeper out, let it heal and have it done again!
I have never regretted it and wear earrings every day smile

Calendargirl Thu 29-Apr-21 07:05:51

14 or 15.

Had then done at local jewellers. First one bled a lot, so he did other ear slightly different place, don’t quite match. Had another piercing in each ear probably 20 years later.

Always wear sleepers, only put earrings in on special occasions, I find studs etc, soon make them sore. Used to always dab the piercings with white iodine to disinfect them, don’t think you can buy it now.

I think I was about 10. I really can’t remember! I’m a bit of an earring fan and am known for my wide collection!

My daughter had hers done at 8. She’d always said it sounded painful and didn’t want it doing, but suddenly decided she’d like them doing. So we just got them done.

Nansypansy Thu 29-Apr-21 07:22:00

I didn’t have mi e pierced until I was about 40. My daughter had been nagging to let me have hers pierced when she was about 17 .... I was very anti ..... and when I finally gave my consent I decided tote mine done too!!

JaneJudge Thu 29-Apr-21 07:29:51

13 as that was when I was allowed to. I had them done in Debenhams in Southport

cornergran Thu 29-Apr-21 07:33:51

A hairdresser friend pierced mine. She used a gun thing that made a noise but didn’t hurt. I was 29 and very pregnant. My friends husband prowled around with a worried look muttering he had no desire to be a midwife. grin. I love earrings, have far too many, all small, change them daily according to what I’m wearing.

Charleygirl5 Thu 29-Apr-21 07:45:42

In my 20's but I really was not interested so I only wore gold studs. I have had zilch in my ears for many years.

M0nica Thu 29-Apr-21 07:49:24

Probably about 12 or 13, maybe 14 but certainly fairly early teens. I don't think my parents were too bothered, I've got a southern Mediterranean background on one side of the family, earrings on young girls are very much acceptable in such cultures. Although personally I hate them on babies, I think it should be a choice, not something that is inflicted upon you.
