I remember it well, I got mine pieced on my 13th birthday, went to the jewellers with my mum and felt very brave sitting there waiting for the needle, ? was disappointed I couldn’t have nice gold studs though , had to have the awful thin hoop, felt very grown up and couldn’t wait until Xmas few months later to get my first gold studs

This has brought back memories of how I was put off wearing earrings.

My Mum acquired a rescue parrot called Mac who perched on her shoulder muttering sweet nothings into her ear in a cheesy, Leslie Phillips way.

Mac's second love was polo mints. When Mum switched to wearing hoop sleepers Mac hooked his beak through one and pulled hard in the hope of a tasty snack. The romantic interlude was shattered by frantic shrieking and flapping from both parties! I couldn't stop laughing. Ah, happy days.

Strange how fashions about this change. My Mum (born at the beginning of the 20th century)had hers done as a child, as did all her sisters. However, when I was small, she considered it very common (she never wore earings herself). As a teenager and later I wore clip on earrings.

Decided in my late 50's to have this done. Did not tell anyone - although some of the youngsters are work noticed very quickly. Really enjoyed being able to wear ear-rings when I was going somewhere dressy. Nowaday, only wear them very rarely, and then just nice studs. This last year have had to remind myself to put them in occasionally, to prevent those little holes from closing up.

Never had it done; don't like earrings on me.

I was 16 and had gone to the jewellers with my friend to give her moral support but I was persuaded to have mine done too. My Mum hit the roof when I got home. She said if I was meant to have pierced ears I would have been born with holes in them. I got zero sympathy when one of the piercings turn septic.

I was 12 when I first had them pierced. Birthday present from a friend at school, we went to a local jewellers to have them done. Old fashioned way, earlobe frozen and then a needle. Little gold sleepers. My mum and dad went bonkers, mum thought it was common! Had second ear piercing at 22 in 1979. I always wear 2 pairs, but the back pair are very small huggie hoops. Took my GD to have hers done when she was 7, at her request and with parents' permission.

My Nan, born in 1883, had hers done as a child. I remember her with and without earrings - she would leave them out for years at a time but the holes never closed up!

I was in my 40s,stopped wearing them two weeks ago as i was fed upof loosing them whilst removing my face mask, also they were hard to put in due to wrist problems.
Wished i had never bothered having them pierced tbh.

I was 19, and away at college in Sheffield. Had them done in the jewellery section of a large department store down The Mall.
No problems, bathed the lobes with surgical spirit every night, I had gold studs.

Only problem was when it came to the time when I was allowed to take them out and put in a different pair ( ? after 6 weeks). I was home on Christmas break and had bought new small dangly ones, for a party. I nearly fainted when I had to push the post through my ear lobe! Mum took over, sat me down, and did the job for me. Took me a while to get used to the feeling of pushing that post through my ear!

Still love earrings now, DH surprised me on Valentine's Day with a lovely silver heart shaped pair, with a tiny diamond. xx

I had my ears pierced on my 40th birthday. It was my birthday gift to myself. I have never regretted it. I love wearing earrings.

MiniMoon Thu 29-Apr-21 10:30:47

I was 21. I had them pierced in the living room of the house behind the jewellery shop. The lady who did them was a district nurse, wife of the jeweller.

Juno56 Thu 29-Apr-21 10:39:25

I was 18. My mother didn't think that children should have pierced ears but said that when I was 18 I could decide for myself. These days I mainly wear a small pair of studs but when the occasion calls for it I love very long dangly ones.

22. I wanted to be sophisticated for my wedding ! I taught in a school where the other young teachers had pierced ears and copied them ! Mostly only wear pearl studs as drop earrings never look right on me and I don't really know why. I still like the look. Don't regret it and have never had an infection because of it.

I meant to say that my DH has one ear pierced, he had it done when he went to university in the late 70s. His father hit the roof and said it made him look like a "nancy boy" (his words). Different times.

Shandy57 Thu 29-Apr-21 10:52:50

I offered to pay for it for my friend's 18th birthday, but she chickened out after watching me having it done! Sat in a jewellers, the woman bought out something like a nutcracker in a hospital kidney bowl! It really hurt.

tickingbird Thu 29-Apr-21 10:59:43

I had mine done at my request when I was 9. It was quite unusual in those days for such a young age. My eldest brother’s girlfriend (16) took me and she had hers done too. She fainted before they even touched her! I used to get called gypsy at school. I can only remember one other girl having pierced ears but they all have them now. I don’t agree with babies having their ears pierced as is the custom now.

OldEnough2noBetter Thu 29-Apr-21 11:25:59

Same as TrendyNanny6, on my 13th birthday, with two friends for company. Mum didn’t want me to do it, but grudgingly agreed. She finally got hers pierced in her 70s because I agreed to buy her a diamond necklace, if she’d wear the matching earrings for pierced ears. After that, never a day without her earrings in!

Westcoaster Thu 29-Apr-21 11:38:42

I was 18 and had them done whilst on holiday with a friend. Not something I was allowed at home so mentioned it in my postcard home to warn the parents!!!
I would add that I'd left home by this time so not sure why I was so worried about opinion grin
Never bother with earrings now.

ninathenana Thu 29-Apr-21 12:41:11

I had to wait until I could pay for 8t myself. So 16, with my first fulltime wage packet

jaylucy Thu 29-Apr-21 12:46:38

First time, I was 19 and the new piercing gun was introduced.
I used to get fed up of going out on a Friday night , dancing, and hearing the "ping" as my clip on earring hit the floor.
After a hospital stay when I was 54, I had to take my earrings out and the holes closed as I stopped wearing them.
18 months ago I decided to have them re pierced so I could wear the earrings languishing in my jewellery box!

Gannygangan Thu 29-Apr-21 12:52:57

I never had mine done.

Everyone at school were getting theirs done and I liked to be different

Not keen on flabby lobes either. My sister had hers done when she was about 16. She used to wear heavy ear-rings and now her ear lobes almost reach her shoulders.

Grandma70s Thu 29-Apr-21 13:02:04

I had completely forgotten until now that my younger son had his ears pierced (possibly only one of them) when he was about fifteen, about thirty years ago. I think a friend did it. I was absolutely furious. He certainly never wears earrings now.

3nanny6 Thu 29-Apr-21 13:11:08

Only one jewellers shop in our town done ear piercing many years ago and you had to be 16 years old. My mum came with me and I was overjoyed to get them done he only put in gold studs and the ears had to be cleaned twice a day. I had a second piercing in the ears when I was about 38 and now can wear two lots of ear-rings. I do like my gold jewellery.

Daisend1 Thu 29-Apr-21 13:11:28

I was thirty five and manager for a Skin Care company. It was my job to visit salons who used my company's range of products . On one visit I was persuaded by a therapist to have my ears pieced. Free, including sleepers.

Deedaa Thu 29-Apr-21 13:20:21

I was about 36 when I had mine done. It was when multiple earrings were becoming fashionable. DD had hers done when she was about 11 I think. Unfortunately she turned out to be allergic to everything except gold so rarely wears earrings.

Saxifrage Thu 29-Apr-21 13:24:07

I was 52 when my daughter persuaded me I would enjoy buying proper earrings. She was right, I now have a large collection and enjoy them. I could never wear clip earrings before that, too painful.
