Who remembers these, those were the days, I remember we used to have the pink in our bathroom when I lived at home to match the white bath and pink and white bathroom tiles

Coloured toilet paper…..what about the dreadful izal tracing paper on a roll or sheets in a box !

I only buy the Eco loo paper made from recyled paper pulp, it is a slightly dirty off white so I assume, if bleached, there is less bleach used thanin the whiter paper.

When are we going to start getting serious about the damage we are doing to the environment? We don't need coloured toilet paper, and we don't need bleached white ones. There is nothing unacceptable about natural loo paper: the fact that it looks slightly dirty doesn't matter. I can remember my grandma using newspaper!

I think manufacturers are always thinking of ways to charge more for a basic necessity. Coloured rolls, scented, aloe vera, coconut smelling, patterned, quilted, sneaky smaller narrower ones with no cardboard middles, and so on.

They’re only to wipe the bottom and flush for goodness sake. Not an interior design necessity.

Just add wet wipes to the list, special ones for the bathroom. I'm not sure if they are designed to be flushed but baby wipes can't be flushed.

I do remember when walking along the aisle in the Supermarket where the loo rolls were was like walking through a rainbow. Blue pink, Green, Peach were the main colours, there was always just very few in white. Others had flowers or such like printed on them.
I did have blue to match my blue bathroom, but white in cloakroom and en-suite. NEVER had those horrible crocheted doll cover things. Nor did I have a cover for the loo seat cover, or one of those strange mats that went round the pedestal.

Did have a carpet in bathroom in the 80's, but was delighted when I had that replaced with cushionfloor.

When I moved into my present flat in 2019 it was advertised as 'carpeted throughout' and it was!! including both en-suite and bathroom. My daughter who got the keys on moving day got both of those clear of carpet before I arrived (as we had arranged).

Wonder what people in twenty or thirty years will look back at this time and laugh about?

I'm another who'd forgotten about coloured toilet paper. I did once buy blue to match a bathroom and later other colours for a bit of variety in the white bathrooms. I think I gave up when I learnt the dyes could be damaging to the environment. The white ones are bleached though and I suspect that's not good either.
My memories go back to the dreaded Izal which we had when I was a young child. Us kids used it for tracing paper. It was useless for its intended purpose.
This thread has also made me remember that, when Trump was President, toilet rolls were produced with his face upon the sheets! Ugh! I wouldn't have wanted that face anywhere near my btm.

One of the supermarkets (can’t recall which) does a double length loo roll, with a smaller diameter cardboard centre. It’s wrapped in a paper outer, is decent quality and they claim is better for the environment as it uses less card and reduces transport costs.

If only I could remember where I bought it! confused

Is it Asda? They now do a double length roll but the outer packaging is plastic.

It's a great idea but I have had to buy two new toilet roll holders as the rolls were too wide for my old ones.

In Australia, they used to have perfume impregnated on the cardboard cores. I thought it was a good idea as when you pulled the sheets of it released the fragrance. Better than it actually being in the toilet paper itself. I don't know if they still do it.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks NotSpaghetti

Grannie314 Mon 27-Feb-23 12:06:58

Yes I do! There was a brand that was white with tiny little pink flowers/green leaves! I loved it and was sad to see it go. Not sure I'd love it. 🤭

I do remember coloured toilet rolls and horrible coloured bathroom suites. Maroon and Dark Brown come to mind. On a slightly different note has anyone else think the size of toilet rolls have shrunk considerably

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 27-Feb-23 12:13:16

Think I generally bought white toilet rolls because I never could buy a colour that really matched my bathrooms over the years

Zoejory Mon 27-Feb-23 12:16:09

I didn't know coloured wallpaper wasn't available any more!

We got some Christmas loo roll from M&S but it wasn't very exciting.

I'm disappointed now. We get white loo roll but I now want some bright pink or neon yellow.

LovelyLady Mon 27-Feb-23 12:16:38

We weren’t allowed the pastel toilet paper. My Mother thought we should be able to see what we were wiping. I think she was talking about periods. So we always had white. The quality wasn’t great compared to what we expect today.

SueDonim Mon 27-Feb-23 12:21:57

No, not Asda, Pinkcosmos as I don’t shop there. I think it might have been Morrisons, though I could have conflated it with the paper-wrapped tissue from Home Bargains. As you can tell, I’m not a loyal shopper. grin

My Facebook is inundated with adverts for loo roll today. 👀

Hellogirl1 Mon 27-Feb-23 12:28:31

Tesco do longer toilet rolls, in packs of 6. A pack of 6 lasts much longer than the packs of 9 I used to buy. They cost more, obviously, but I think I get my moneysworth. My bathroom is beige and white, I used to buy cream or peach toilet rolls, but only white is available these days.

Hetty58 Mon 27-Feb-23 12:42:47

The white loo rolls have chlorine bleach, harmful to aquatic life (and probably us, too) so I buy the unbleached beige ones instead.

Many years ago, we gave a close friend a few doors down a key to our house when we were on holiday, so that she could check the house. One year, when we got home, I noticed the toilet roll in our bathroom was peach, which I never bought. I asked my parents, who had a spare key, if they had been to our home, but they hadn’t. It was a mystery. However, good friend soon appeared to explain that, due to a family bereavement, a number of her relatives needed accommodation for a couple of nights in order to attend the funeral. She thought that we wouldn’t mind if a couple stayed at our house. She used her own towels, bed linen - and toilet paper. Mystery solved. She told me that she gave our house to the ‘ nicest relatives ‘!

Was there avocado coloured loo roll?

Annewilko Mon 27-Feb-23 12:57:00

I remember my aunt having purple 💜 tp. I thought this was so sophisticated. It was mine and Donny Osmands favourite colour, had to love it.

Sharina Mon 27-Feb-23 13:00:19

Lol. Yes. My mother wouldn’t allow it because white paper was cheaper. As an act of rebellion, every year I buy the M&S Christmas toilet paper!! Sometimes “good taste” is so … narrow.

clobden28 Mon 27-Feb-23 13:00:31

i coild never see the sense in buying coloured toilet paper, because it all came out brown in the end ! And although I buy my toilet paper in packs of 4 or 6 rolls, I still have the emergency supply kept under the skirt of a knitted toilet roll holder, sitting on top of the cistern.

grannybuy Mon 27-Feb-23 13:08:51

Anything’s better than having to use newspaper, which I had to, as a child.

Anneeba Mon 27-Feb-23 13:24:03

Late 1990s when we went to Oz for a year, not only perfumed loo rolls, but highly patterned. Added to the sense of dislocation we felt to start with!

Happysexagenarian Mon 27-Feb-23 13:35:04

Yes I remember coloured loo rolls. My Mum usually bought the cheapest white rolls but if visitors were expected she'd splash out on a peach or blue roll. Prior to the coming of soft loo rolls we had Izal or torn up newspapers threaded on a length of string. It was usually my task to tear and thread them.

A friend of mine worked in a large supermarket where a well known star of film and TV shopped every week. He always had to have two packs of coloured loo rolls, 1 peach, one pale green, for his bathrooms. On one occasion they had sold out of green so my friend bought a pack from another store and personally delivered them to his home. He was amazed and delighted and the following week gave her a box of chocolates as a thank you.
