Well I never knew couth was a word.

It's a proper education, this Gransnet. Ever so pleased I am, to be allowed to take part. Makes you proper grateful, so it does. ( reverses out, tugging forelock respectfully )

I always thought you were a couthy Scot

It certainly is a word....otherwise there wouldn’t be an uncouth.?

Mmm, yes but, so-called unpaired words are a thing, where one form is either nonexistent or very rare. Or even, in the most celebrated case (flammable/inflammable) mean the same.

Eg intrepid ..

Curlywhirly Sat 25-Sept-21 09:08:51

I wonder, if a man with Angela Rayner's background and accent had given the same speech would there be the same amount of criticism? Just saying ....

theworriedwell Sat 25-Sept-21 09:15:46

Is gorm a word? If you can be gormless can you be gorm?

Anniebach Sat 25-Sept-21 09:20:27

I can’t think of any party leader or members of the cabinet or
shadow cabinet with or had a strong accent.

Alegrias1 Sat 25-Sept-21 09:20:56

I hope I'm a couthy Scot Petera smile

If I was gorm I'd be blue about it. Scots Gaelic joke.

I remember visiting Cambridge whilst a student and people having a good old laugh at my Scots accent. When I told them that their accents were just as strong, they laughed and said "Oh, no, not us, we have no accent at all." Just before the plums fell out of their mouths.

Alegrias1 Sat 25-Sept-21 09:28:46

Gorm is Gaelic for blue.

It's not that funny, but its quite early on a Saturday, its the best I can do. wink

I heard AR on the news this morning and had no problem in understanding her, she may not have had "an education" at university but she can certainly string more words together than BJ however, I do wish politicians would just answer the question instead of repeating the same thing over and over again.

lemongrove Sat 25-Sept-21 09:54:59

Am not sure about that Anniebach I think there are bound to have been/are some. The present Speaker has a strong Lancashire accent.Gavin Williamson has a Yorkshire accent and Pritti Patel has ( or seems to have) quite an accent, as has Esther McVey
I really don’t think that having an accent of any kind holds you back these days.

Anniebach Sat 25-Sept-21 10:09:31

lemon there has been critcism here of Prittie Patel not pronouncing G.

There are accents and regional accents are there not ?

Kinnock?

Zoejory Sat 25-Sept-21 10:20:36

Who is that wonderful MP? Is he still an MP? Not sure what party he was in. Probably Labour. Pretty sure he was from the North. He had an accent and a half. Really used to enjoy listening to him. Even though, as you can tell, politics isn't really my specialist subject.

lemongrove Sat 25-Sept-21 10:23:31

Zoe ?

Curlywhirly Sat 25-Sept-21 10:24:04

Is it just a Britsh thing to stereotype people with certain accents ? I wonder if France, Italy, Germany, the US have the same problem?

Anniebach Sat 25-Sept-21 10:25:46

Yes growtuff and Gordon Brown , neither won an election when party leader.

Parsley3 Sat 25-Sept-21 10:27:31

I think of all accents as country first then regional if my ear can tell the difference. I am aware of Scottish regional accents as I live here. I am now aware of the regional variety of English, Welsh and Irish accents from listening to television programmes and newsreaders. To my ears both Johnson and Starmer have accents. Everyone does and if a person can only be credible if they have the right accent then surely one should aspire to speak like the Queen to get on in life.

Zoejory Sat 25-Sept-21 10:28:10

Got it, lemongrove! Dennis Skinner! I liked him. And he's still alive. Thank you Google.

Anniebach Sat 25-Sept-21 10:30:10

I don’t think there is a right accent, but some regional accents irritate some people.

lemongrove Sat 25-Sept-21 10:36:30

I could listen to Welsh accents all day long Anniebach?

lemongrove Sat 25-Sept-21 10:40:45

Ah yes Zoe ‘the beast of Bolsover’?

Anniebach Sat 25-Sept-21 10:41:23

lemon think Richard Burton ?
