Braverman's behaviour in parliament today proves nothing has changed.

Suella Braverman scuttling out of the commons today to avoid scrutiny is a clear indication that nothing has changed with the Tories. The question from Yvette Cooper was tabled in plenty of time so she has no excuses. The fact that she walked out in full view of the speaker doesn't enhance his reputation either.

Volver you may enjoy deriding another poster’s comments but it is not my way at all.
If it were an easy problem to solve, then there would be no migrant problem.Undoubtedly the government has been lax, but the numbers arriving this last year have I think trebled.
The economic migrants from Albania will keep arriving because they know what they can earn here. Some say they have been deported several times but will always find a way back here.Since the numbers have been so great from Albania that is the first problem to tackle, but even so they can claim they are not safe in Albania and it takes time to assess their claims.I believe this migrant problem to be one of the more important things to solve for the government, as it is affecting many people in the South of England.

Where were your figures from Prentice?

This is the latest government bulletin which doesn’t bear out what you’ve said.

Oh dear! It is worse than I realised.
Just over 8 thousand arriving in 2020 and just over 28,000 arrived in 2021.

Casdon Sat 05-Nov-22 18:27:52

No, if you look at figure 4, you’ll see that the numbers haven’t dramatically increased, what has changed is the method of arrival in the UK.

DH and I were just watching the ITV news where they spoke about the "migration problem" That's lazy talk; there is a management problem, not a migration problem.

DH also pointed out that about 40,000 people have arrived by boat this year. Less than the number in a good football crowd. And we can't manage that? It's shameful.

Something I don't understand.

If Albanians only stay in the UK for a few months, why don't they just get a standard tourist visa?

www.ivisa.com/united-kingdom-blog/united-kingdom-standard-visitor-visa-for-citizens-of-albania

They wouldn't be allowed to work, but it sounds as though some of them have networks which arrange illegal work anyway. By the time they're caught, they could earn enough money to take back to Albania. If they're lucky, they might not be caught and could come back again the next year or the could overstay their visa and it would take ages for the authorities to find them.

Why do they pay smugglers thousands of pounds, when they could just get a visa and come to the UK on a plane or train/ferry?

Maudi Sun 06-Nov-22 07:52:35

They pay vast amounts of money to the smuggling gangs because they are basically criminals and wouldn't be allowed a visa.

The business model of the criminal traffickers would be totally destroyed if there were a legal route into the UK for legitimate asylum seekers.

It is being reported that Braverman has failed to turn up today to the HoC to answer the Urgent Question on the Government's treatment if refugee children and overcrowding at Manston. Apart from anything else, this is hugely disrespectful to Parliament, surely there should be some kind of procedure for this?

Iam64 Mon 07-Nov-22 17:57:03

HousePkantQueen, normal rules of engagement no longer matter to this government.

MaizieD Mon 07-Nov-22 18:20:53

I'm just astounded at how they've manged to clear 2,400 people out of Manston in the space of a week.

I rather think that the adverse publicity and vociferous condemnation was just a wee bit too much for Braverman to outface...

Jenrick sounded almost like a human being in the 15 minutes or so of the responses to the UQ that I saw...
