Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

I haven’t read all this thread as been too busy to catch up today but just seen a worrying video on Sky News of a female reporter having to be taken off air whilst reporting from Birmingham. She was being threatened and intimidated by Muslim thugs wearing masks. One made a gun motion, another rode up on a bike wearing a mask shouting something about Palestine or Gaza and making certain gestures. Very scary indeed as what I’m concerned about looks as if it’s starting - one community of thugs against another. It’s the innocents getting caught up in it. The police wouldn’t be able to stop it. It’s truly terrifying.

My son told me about that. i didn’t see it myself. Sounds dreadful.

Masked man or Muslim? We still don't seem to have established the truth here.

Doodledog Mon 05-Aug-24 20:53:13

No. I'd like to know how his religion was apparent in the circumstances.

Aveline Mon 05-Aug-24 20:53:56

Yuk sounds awful. However, people are already being badly injured in these riots. I still think a good soaking would do them all good. Doesn't have to be high velocity. Just hoses!

HousePlantQueen Mon 05-Aug-24 20:59:49

I wish that people would check before posting inflammatory comments such as Sadiq Khan "selling the water cannon", a very easy fact to check and see that he had inherited them as an expensive white elephant courtesy of one Boris Johnson. In these volatile times, we surely all understand the impact of inaccurate and inflammatory posts

We are in a dreadful situation - and feelings run high - but I really agree people should check sources. when we don't, and statements are just made as fact, our discussions very soon turn into "yes he did, no he didnt" and then accusations at each other.

Please - we're better than this, it takes only a short time to check a source 🙏

I wish, Wyllow3. We’d be in our own echo chamber though, because so much of the source material used is what my son would call well dodge.

Young people often have a quick phrase that nails it
Well dodge a case in point

Isn’t actually that straightforward. First you have to find a water source and then attach a hose to it. Not the easiest of things to do in the middle of a riot.

Just watching.

No surprise - far right rioters turn up in our cities and we are surprised that anti racist groups now turning up too?

cut off the far right riots!

Is a masked man the same as a Muslim now

No but he was with a crowd of others and was draped in a Palestinian flag?

Stop trying to make out I’m racist. They were Asian. Part of his face was visible.

This is far too serious to be trying to score silly points.

tickingbird Mon 05-Aug-24 22:42:59

This was on Sky News not GB News

Ok. He had dark skin? Not all 'Asians' are Muslim. Not all supporters of the Palestinian cause are either Asian or Muslim, or anything, really. How do you know that the 'crowd of others' were Muslim?

Can we please stop jumping to ridiculous conclusions,

Nobody is 'trying to make out' that you are racist. You may or may not be, and I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt. But that comment really was.

And many Muslims aren't Asian.

Oh just stop. No different to describing the rioters as far right thugs. They were Muslims. Their religion isn’t the point. They were carrying weapons and there was a large crowd of them behaving in such a threatening manner the woman reporter had to be taken off air.

If all this rioting carries on there will be turmoil on our streets; more than there presently is. Now is not the time for point scoring.

It's very different from describing rioters as far-right thugs, but (as you pointed out) now is not the time for point-scoring (or spreading unsubstantiated gossip).

I won't stop calling out stereotypes.

RosiesMaw2 Mon 05-Aug-24 23:46:38

One image which sticks in my mind was of the rioter in beige shorts which a police dog had firmly closed its jaws on.
I wish the dog had been allowed to hold on to the shorts as the man ran off as the ensuing ridicule of continuing in his pants might have defused the situation - even a bit.

Plus they were described on the news as Muslim men. Take it up with Sky if you don’t like facts.

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 06:41:44

With rain forecast I expect things will calm down.
Otherwise perhaps hoses could be attached to fire hydrants which are available all over the place!

Draped in a Palestinian flag does not mean Muslim.

Being in a crowd does not mean Muslim.

Being Asian not mean Muslim.

Not interested in point scoring. Can't abide lies and misinformation put out there by the usual people.

They were not described as such. I have just listened to the report.

The situation nationally is very worrying indeed.

Oh please. Just stop with your denials of truth. I’m watching it being discussed now with footage. They were outside a mosque to begin with, threatened the reporter then moved to a drink and dine pub and caused trouble there where ordinary people were having meals and proceeded to beat a man up.

They were described as south Asian/Pakistani Muslims.

The post was designed to be provocative.

Without context - what was the purpose of saying that Khan sold them other than to ratchet up the anti-Khan propaganda?

Within the context of the sale, it becomes an entirely different scenario.

Cadeby Tue 06-Aug-24 10:14:32

It is almost as if the person who initially commented on the Birmingham masked man was gleeful. It supports the narrative.

However, you are right tickingbird nothing to be gained by this sort of conversation.
