Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

Yuk sounds awful. However, people are already being badly injured in these riots. I still think a good soaking would do them all good. Doesn't have to be high velocity. Just hoses!

Isn’t actually that straightforward. First you have to find a water source and then attach a hose to it. Not the easiest of things to do in the middle of a riot.

... and if the police are overpowered and the rioters get hold of the hose - what then?

Also, the force from the hydrants are not like a garden hose where you can playfully target each other in the garden for a laugh. What would happen if someone - either a protestor / rioter or policeman were seriously injured by having the full force directed on them?

It just is not that simple. Only in theory.

Oh dear, doesn't bear thinking about. How very worrying.

How do the police cope in other countries?

People are already being hurt in these riots! Just have to hope for a good downpour.

Oh just stop. No different to describing the rioters as far right thugs. They were Muslims. Their religion isn’t the point. They were carrying weapons and there was a large crowd of them behaving in such a threatening manner the woman reporter had to be taken off air.

If all this rioting carries on there will be turmoil on our streets; more than there presently is. Now is not the time for point scoring.

How can their religion not be the point, when someone is described as Muslim? Just how?

Being brown is not being Muslim, in the same way that being white is not being a thug.

A masked person/man on a bike is called Muslim, and we are supposed to believe that this is a neutral and objective comment. It is nothing of the sort.

Doodledog Tue 06-Aug-24 13:23:07

And anyway, if he is wearing a mask, how do we even know that he is brown?

They seem to cope just fine don’t they?😄

Doodledog Tue 06-Aug-24 13:26:15

Yeah, Tiananmen Square is an example to us all.

What tickingbird is talking about is absolutely true.I went onto SkyNews app on my iPad this morning and there was a section about a female reporter talking into the camera, it was a small mobile Sky unit. They reported that Muslim men were massing near a mosque and they said that they hoped the police would protect it but if not they were ready to do that, and some carried bats and other weapons.A man on a moped and two other young Muslim men then came close up to the news unit and said things after which the older Muslim men said don’t leave it’s fine, but they felt threatened so got into their car/ van to leave.A younger man then attacked their tyres with a large knife but they were able to drive away.

Perhaps you can google this Doodledog then you won’t be keen to label a poster as a fantasist or worse.

I've looked at the recording and the men on motorbikes don't even look brown to me (from the parts of faces and hands, which are visible). Nothing to stop a white person being Muslim, of course. hmm

You have to read the accompanying text from the Sky journalist, it’s no good just looking at a pic.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 13:36:24

Oreo That's the video I was watching and they really don't look brown.

You haven’t read the report which goes with it! You need to do that.

I have read it. Sky News does not claim that the three men on the bikes nor the man who tried to slash their vehicle's tyres was Muslim.

I saw more than two and she looked so scared I felt sorry for her feeling so scared in our country where she should have felt safe. But these men have no respect for white woman

A generalisation.

I could argue when watching a pair of white rioters kicking a young Asian woman as she was curled up on the ground trying to protect herself proves that white men have no respect for women of colour.

But I won’t because I know how ignorant that sounds.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 13:44:01

Which men Nannashirlz?

Cossy Tue 06-Aug-24 13:47:20

How dare anyone suggest that all Muslims (and or people of colour) have no respect for white women! It’s simply isn’t true, why can’t some of you accept that there are some people in the world, across the world, irrespective of their colour/race/religion/nationality are bad. To simply tar an entire cohort of people is pure discrimination.

Wyllow3 Tue 06-Aug-24 13:47:56

Its just that there have been thousands of such incidents including actual injury to or police have happened over the last week, many far more serious than this one.

But I haven't noticed a single one which reports "white christians..."white attackers" etc etc. Why not, if we are to have race-naming on crime. No wonder groups feel picked on.

Crime is crime, and racialising it only increases divisiveness.

Yes, I have.

Rates of male crimes/violence against women by men are regrettably very high in our country as a whole. To pin it on any group is to ignore this and to ignore the suffering of women affected.

I wasn't aware that a person's religion described their character or actions.

In an ideal world , everyone of every religion would adhere to the tenets of their own faith, but as we know it doesn't happen.
If it did we might live in a world of love and unity.

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 14:10:39

Additionally, many identify with a faith when they go into hospital and when asked, they may say "Muslim" or "church of England" (or any other religion)... but if you saw their day to day life it would bear no witness to the religion they claim.

So I don't think categorising people by the faith they claim is even helpful unless you see them living it out in a real way that shows they practice what they say they believe.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 14:15:09

The claim that the man on the bike and the two others were Muslims has prompted discussion about male violence and religion (as intended probably).

From the evidence of the video itself and the accompanying commentary, there is no claim that these men were Muslim. The reporter was talking to community elder and talking about Muslims protecting their mosque, but there was no suggestion about who the three men were. The one on the bike obviously didn't want to be recognised because his number plate was covered up.
