Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

If he didn't want to be recognised, he wasn't proud of what he was doing, which means he knew he shouldn't be doing it.

If someone believes in what they are doing and are proud to stand for it, they will be more likely to show their face unless they are cowardly.

So we've just had a warning that there is a planned riot in central Brighton tomorrow.. they apparently want to torch the immigration centre.. so news on Nextdoor is that loads of people are going to try to stop them.. heaven help us if it becomes a battle..

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 14:48:02

How did the warning come? It's up to the police to act , or the army if necessary. Members of the public are not trained for this and don't have items of protective clothing like the police and forces do. Worrying times.

Surely it's the governments responsibiity to move the immigrants to a place of safety? I wasn't pro Rwanda, but Rwanda might be better than this danger?

That is truly awful and very frightening indeed.

In this climate are there any places of safety? These right wing thugs (sorry if that offends anyone!) will target ANY Muslim, not just those in immigration centres.

It’s a horrible situation and frankly I’d bring the army and round up ALL the troublemakers and ship them off to Rwanda!

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 14:56:07

Oh, I totally agree with you! I'd be very happy to see the trouble makers deported as well!

It is a horrible situation and I'm sorry if my comments offended anyone. I'm in shock like many of us are. I don't really have answers.

Yes my hairdresser told me this morning.

If only the police could kettle the rioters or stop them at the border or station. If they have the man power it wouldn’t be difficult.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Aug-24 15:03:18

They are burning down businesses, picking on individuals in the street burning mosques, offices and centres.

For the life of me I can’t tell the difference between what is happening and what happened in Germany.

growstuff Tue 06-Aug-24 15:03:36

I don't think Rwanda (or any other country) would want them.

pascal30 Tue 06-Aug-24 15:53:45

Sussex police have made it public that rioters will regret their actions if they come tomorrow to Brighton.. so we'll see...

^What would happen if someone - either a protestor / rioter ..... were seriously injured by having the full force directed on them?^
Oh dear, doesn't bear thinking about. How very worrying.

How do the police cope in other countries?

How do the police cope in other countries?

With difficulty, like us.

Some European countries still use water cannons = Belgium and The Netherlands according to Google.

Of course, in some countries, they just shoot them. With the inevitable results.

I don't think it's easy for the police to decide on a proportional response, because they are rather damned if they do and damned if they don't. And I imagine that goes for most other civilised countries also.

I believe the idea is containment - perhaps easier prior to the advent of social media and the easy mobilisation of potential demonstrators / rioters. Not to mention the inflammatory posts and comments.

Yes I think that governments have a lot to catch up on re- social media, and I bet we see cooperation over getting control over what this is clearly - an existential issue.

Apart from anything else, this will have a devastating effect on businesses - especially the smaller ones.

Since some of the protestors seem bent on looting and arson attacks, how many small shops, stalls, cafes, etc will want to remain open?

There are also a number of B&Bs in Brighton, presumably some housing asylum seekers, a percentage of which I believe are under 18.

It doesn't bode well. And I feel sorry for the locals.

Cossy Tue 06-Aug-24 16:10:02

Our police in Southend were stationed at a few train stations and didn’t allow groups of non residents youths off, literally sent them home, after our very recent issues.

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 16:15:54

Perhaps the rioters are in private accommodation or own their own home (but I suspect not) but the stupid thugs have obviously not considered that a conviction with a sentence over 12 months will mean they will be removed from any Council tenancy agreements, should they be living in social housing.

Is it that the stupid rioters are prepared to lose their jobs and homes (can't pay mortgage in prison) etc to commit such violence, or are "rent a mob" on benefits and being paid cash in hand? I'm sure the police will get to the bottom of it.

As far as the "information" or rumors.... whoever is spreading rumours or facts should be arrested and questioned so the police can find out who is behind these attacks and find out where they got their intelligence.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Aug-24 16:25:34

The thing with Brighton is that it is a town that is pretty liberal in outlook, and there is very little evidence (well I haven’t seen any) of racism, and a lot of help for people from other communities, asylum seekers etc.

This will be entirely imported apart from some useful idiots jumping on the bandwagon.

Let’s hope they change their minds and stay away or the police stop them at the borders.

They're targeting a 'Refugees Welcome Event' next door to Brighton station.. apparently

but also someone has just put a list of other targets up on Nextdoor of loads of other towns including Hastings, Chatham, Chelmsford and Canterbury for tomorrow.. which he claims has been validated.. (It's a copy of a message) and they're all immigration Centres or hubs..

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 16:29:12

these men don’t respect white women
Surely that sweeping statement breaches guidelines? It’s untrue as well. I live in an area with a large Muslim population. I’ve worked with Muslim families, as well as families of our diverse culture. I’ve been threatened by white British people but genuinely not by Muslim men

I have friends who volunteer there.

The Daily Mail published a list of all the hotels housing immigrants didn’t they?

MaizieD Tue 06-Aug-24 16:58:45

If we know all about these plans here on Gnet, then surely the 'authorities' will be aware and prepared?

And able to trace and arrest the organisers?

well according to our local newspaper the Sussex Police are ready and waiting, and one would hope some of them are doing something to arrest the perpetrators..MaizieD.. it would make sense but maybe they're skilled with hiding on social media?

Cossy Tue 06-Aug-24 17:15:21

It’s all bloody awful! Pretty scary and completely unnecessary!

Oreo Tue 06-Aug-24 17:21:27

Brighton seems an unlikely venue but who knows? The mods and rockers had running battles there in the past.
If other countries use water cannon or tear gas then maybe we should when it’s necessary too.

OnwardandUpward Tue 06-Aug-24 17:36:34

The reason Boris wasted all that money on the water cannons that could not be used is that in Germany a man suffered serious eye damage with his eye balls popping out of his fractured sockets after being in the way of a water cannon.

It's a shame more research was not done as a great deal of
UK money was wasted by the conservatives when they had to basically sell them for scrap because they couldn't be used here.
